<h1>Glamis Sand Dunes - Part 2</h1>
I guess we’ve decided that Glamis will be an annual ritual for Thanksgiving weekend. We all have Thanksgiving with our families and Friday morning it’s off to the dunes!
2 Campers, 2 trucks and 4 Can-am Mavericks. We love the big boy toys! 
When arriving to Glamis, first objective is to pick our spot. Out of thousands of people setting up shop, it’s not so easy to find your home for the weekend but we always seem to set camp in the best location. Once camp is set, it’s ride till you die, BBQ until there’s no more fire and meat and relax on a good ol’ American bud light.

One of our few damages this weekend. 
Can-ams can definitely take a beating in the dunes but this should not have happened…on the whoops, the front hit the base and completely broke the arm of the car that holds the wheel…stuck in the dunes is not ideal…
Towing out of the sand is a nightmare but we made the best of it. All the “hiccups” just adds more fun to trip :)

<h1>Highway passion </h1>
For the record, I don’t think it’s a great travesty that fewer young people are choosing to drive. Why? Based on who’s already using the roads, it’s clear that a huge number of people aren’t concerned with operating a vehicle safely, so if Uber, the autonomous Google Car, or some other thing can free those people to browse their Instagram accounts while on the go—awesome. More free space (and safer roads) for the rest of us.

<h1>Glamis Sand Dunes</h1>
We headed out to Glamis near the Mexicali border for a weekend with the boys and toys. Glamis is a massive off-road park with endless sanddunes and no rules ☠️
200,000 people head out to Glamais for Thanksgiving weekend. We went 8 guys, 2 campers, 2 trucks and 2 side-by-sides and ripped through the sand all weekend. Great way to burn off those Thanksgiving calories.

<h1>The Drags</h1>
The Drags is an open runway where all the big boys go to race their machines while everyone gets on both sides of the strip to watch. 
Below is my buddy racing his TRX with the 2 race flags. 
If you are not racing, you are watching with a good old American Bud Light🍺.

<h1>Oldsmobile Hill</h1>
Oldsmobile is where everyone meets up to race up the big dune. Saturday night, we drove all the toys up to the top and set up shop. We brought firewood, drinks, snacks and music. Everyone has their toys lit up with neon lights and rally’s at the dune with a full firework show throughout the night.

I got a 1-year ceramic coat put on my brand new 2021 Audi A4! They have a 5-year ceramic option but my lease is only 3 years, so I'll be back for another ceramic coat in about a year. Honestly, the car looks even better than the detail the dealer gave before dropping it off for delivery. 
Justin, one of the co-founders of <a href="https://instagram.com/westladetail?utm_medium=copy_link">@WestLAdetail</a>, did a great job on the Audi. He demonstrated how water elegantly drips off the paint after the ceramic coat is put on by pouring some water on the hood. Drip drip, it repelled with ease!
His service options are superb and was super easy to work with to schedule the appointment. These guys are all about great customer service and I will continue to promote them as the #1 professional car detail service in Los Angeles.

<h1>Art of the pivot </h1>
How to change your work environment to fit the future

Over the last year we have all found our selves in a interesting predicament. Covid has caused some major restructuring in certain markets. My last Magma mag focused on how my imagery is evolving. How sometimes change is ￼necessary in order to reconnect with creativity when the our passion becomes stagnant. What I didn’t cover in that mag was the fact that I’ve been a Barber my whole life. Much like photo, barbering is a art. It’s something I use to get the creative juices flowing. It’s also a therapeutic outlet for my self and my clients. A place where we can talk about our world in a comfortable environment without having to feel judgment. Ultimately it’s a place that you should leave looking and feeing amazing. Covid took that for almost a year. Our safe space of conversation and relaxation disappeared into a world of stress and solitude like a harsh winter storm. 
 For those unfamiliar my name is Ryan Rich and I had several barbershops in LA up until a law change forced my buy out at the end of 2018. Although I stayed behind the chair at a shop located on Rose ave in Venice beach I knew I craved different. I was feeling like the conversation with friends in the chair was the only part of the day that I truly looked forward to which isn’t a good feeling when your job is to perform service and the service come secondary to the conversation￼. I knew it was time for a change. Even throughout 2019 I was trying to figure out what my new move was. I craved environment that was solely ￼mine, one on one, and sparked creativity.￼
 I had designed a floor plan for mobile Barbershop early on in 2019. The project overall was unrealistically expensive for a single chair Barbershop. I was looking into other spaces as viable options to put a single chair Barbershop.￼ I found a few locations that would fit my needs but never ended up pulling the trigger on the paperwork... 
 Then the world changed in a dramatic way. Covid forced mass closures￼￼￼￼ of the hair industry. All of a sudden a single chair Barbershop on wheels didn’t seem all that expensive of an idea. I went out and bought a sprinter van. ￼￼

I had a lot of familiarity with sprinter vans from my adventures and road trips over the years. It was actually a dream vehicle of mine. You can do so much with the sprinters. You can make them in the rugged off-road beasts or long glide tried and true roadmaster campers. Through this love of the sprinter chassis I had learned quite a bit about what exactly you need to have to run a successful power set up, insulation, and creature comforts￼￼￼￼￼￼.

Now my dream of having a sprinter was manifesting in a different way. 
 I wasn’t ready to separate from my dream. I needed my sprinter to be a fully functioning mobile barbershop￼￼￼ and adventure rig. I called my good friend ran over a van speed shop in Costa Mesa California to run my idea past him. he had never done a Mobil Barbershop before it was open ears to hearing my idea and with the solid floorplan and his knowledge of these incredible machines we would embark on one of the most unique barbershops the world had ever seen￼￼￼.

Upon completion we have been hit with such an overwhelming amount of support from not only the community but strangers on social media who simply have invested into the project and find it exciting, new, and different.

I finally have a space this fully moldable and impossible to get Stale in. It’s pure creativity in the truest truest form in the work coming out of it shows that. I’m located in Venice Beach on Abbot Kinney three days a week￼￼.

<h1>ANOTHER LAP.</h1>

If you’re reading this give yourself a pat on the back. You kept going, didn’t stop and fought hard. You survived. The stats of yesteryear are behind you and the future is in focus. 
As a global society we have been faced with far more than just an illness. We have been tested as a community. A community that encompasses every single viewpoint and experience and pops out situations that test our adaptation ability.
Truth be told, it may get worse in a lot of ways but we are stronger going into what’s ahead. Our understanding of what it takes is there, all that’s needed is the dedicated effort. 
Find your solitude in quite literally whatever it is that makes you happy. Self care and mental health are a full fledged fucking free for all and everyone has a ticket to the main event. Buy that thing you want. Call that person who gives you comfort and cook that meal that will make you fat. It will all be worth it in the end.
Keep going, don’t stop and fight hard.
Survive.

In the world of collectors there are very few as detail oriented as the all mighty Porsche enthusiast. They’re attention to detail, desire for uniqueness and inclusion of necessary features has brought a resurgence to a once mocked culture. Within the community, among the thousands of mechanical artists is a shop that takes the craft of restoring to a different level. 
Singer is a studio based out of Los Angeles that specializes in creating one off bespoke 911 builds for drivers with an unlimited budget and one hell of an imagination. Their cars are customized down the the very minute detail, meeting every desire of the buyers demands. With the average price tags of $500k+, not even the wealthier of collectors can become part of the Singer family, but the ones who do end up owning masterpieces of air cooled German perfection. 
In a press release and video that appeared in the last week, Singer snuck their latest project into 2021 with the biggest bang possible. A 1994 911 rally machine spec’d for the gods. Everything about it screams full speed, desert performance. If I had to guess based on the features, the durability test would be a 2k miles rally on Mars. Although not street legal, the secret buyer has full intentions of rallying the car to its limits all over the world. To learn more about the car, watch Top Gear’s review above.

<h1>Nike listens. The all mighty Dunk is coming back to their “By You” studio after 6 year hiatus.</h1>
It’s the early 2000’s. Street wear is thriving, the beef is between Kanye and 50 cent and people still had to go to stores to get their sneakers. Among them, the most popular is the dunk. Mostly praised in its puffier, cushioned SB variation, the dunk and its color ways took the sneaker culture to the widespread status once fears by Jordan collectors. Kids were calling every skate shop and foot action within a 40 mile radius trying to hunt down a pair from that weeks drop. Every artist and brand went to sleep at night with the wet dream of receiving a call from Nike asking them to collab on the wearable canvas. It was true mayhem that all of a sudden hit a bulletproof wall. 
The silhouette that was designed for the college basketball community became an out of touch shoe for a tech driven army of hypebeasts who were lapping up yeezys and Jordan’s as their go to purchases. In early 2020 Travis Scott began wearing Nike Sb Dunks exclusively and ignited a fire. People couldn’t get enough of the classic shoe and the Dunk was once again on top.

With an unbelievable run of swell blessing the coast of California over the last 2 weeks. Every big wave warrior hitched a ride up to Mavericks to give it a go. With hopes of massive and clean conditions to be gracing the deadly deep water spot, she didn’t disappoint. 
Peter Mel has been one of the OG’s in half moon bay for more than 20 years now and his knowledge of the spot has awarded him some of the best paddle in big wave rides of all time. On the 8th of January he showed face with his son as his ski driver. What happened next was legendary.
Experience or luck? It’s the first for me.

Willow Springs International Raceway

<h1>On this particular venture to Willow Springs International Raceway me-n-the boys came to spectate our friends as the hit the track for a 5 hour endurance race. </h1>

<h1>Porsche owners club endurance race </h1>
This was a team race, each team had 3 drivers to switch between for the 5 hour duration. 
Both Malcolm and Alex were in this race. Malcolm’s section was during the day when the track was warm and the laps were fast. 
Alex had the more careful job of trying to throw down fast laps in the dark with limited visibility 
Unfortunately Malcolm got caught up with a very overbearing member of the POC, and got pushed off the track and lost a coolent line, he did not finish the race :(
Alex started her shift in the dark and held her lead. Despite the light downpour her team decided not to switch to rain tires to save time out on the track. Alex’s clever driving brought home a 1st place trophy.

Hello, Nathan. Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself and your vehicle?
Hello! My name is Nathan Rowland. I was born in the USA - where I am now living again. Boise, Idaho, to be exact. But in the mid-1990s I was working in Germany for quite some time. My car was also there: an all-black 911 Carrera Coupé from 1987, of course including the distinctive turbo wing.

You had taken your car with you to Germany, what were you doing while you were there? And why was it necessary to bring your beloved 911 with you?

I moved to Germany for work and was able to stay there for four years at first. Back then, I worked in the administration of the US Army. It was a wonderful experience on every level. Why take the 911? Because, of course, when one moves to Germany, one should take one’s German car. Seriously, it was a perfect opportunity to enjoy the 911. Driving the 911 through the gorgeous German countryside was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My daily commute afforded the opportunity to drive 15 miles of twisty country 2-lane roads. Through forests and fields, over hills and down valleys, I knew all the passing points. In the US Porsche community, people take vacations consisting of coming to Germany to drive Porsches! I got to do it every day!

How was it getting the car back home to Boise, Idaho? Any hiccups?

The shipping company was under a new contract with my employer and was totally unprepared for the task. As a result, my car sat in a customs lot in the port of Houston all summer in 2014. The shipper kept blaming customs. One day I had the bright idea to call US Customs in Houston to find out what the problem was. I did an internet search, and the right people answered on the first try. I gave them my VIN number and they looked it up. There was no problem with customs, the shipper was just overwhelmed with the number of cars they had to move. By August it was all worked out but I was pretty mad about it all summer.

Any final thoughts or notes you'd like to include about your car? What makes it so special to you?

Without a doubt, the 911 is best built, best-engineered car I’ve ever owned. It’s over 30 years old and still a design icon, and as mechanically sound as the day it rolled out of the factory. Newer cars may have more horsepower, but will those cars still turn heads 30 years from now? Will they still be on the road? Very, very few will. I’ve driven a handful of track days and also at full speed on the autobahn. I never felt like I was asking too much from it. It always is composed, planted even, and it’s always willing to keep going. I hope to be driving it for many years to come.
