The Vancouver CHW Book Club was privileged to offer North American’s an exclusive opportunity to be part of a conversation with Joel Bakan, an internationally recognized and award-winning author, producer, law scholar and teacher who has worked on landmark legal cases and government policies. Due to popular demand, viewing of the recorded talk between Joel and moderator Adam Elliott Segal will be available by tax deductible donation for you and your family, indefinitely.

Joel Bakan is a professor of law at the University of British Columbia, and a legal scholar and commentator. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, Bakan has law degrees from Oxford, Dalhousie, and Harvard. A frequent recipient of awards for both his writing and teaching, Bakan has worked on landmark legal cases and government policy, and served regularly as a media commentator, appearing on national television and radio. He is a popular and accomplished public speaker who has addressed business, government, academic, and activist audiences in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.
If you have not already seen the film or read the book, The New Corporation, or the original The Corporation, we encourage you to do so at some point. The film was long- listed for an Oscar and the book is currently up for the BC and Yukon Book award. What is necessary, is to get some important insights into the green-washing of “new and presumably improved” Corporations. We need to understand what we can do as individuals and what really constitutes “fake news.”

How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy
The world has changed a lot since 2003 when The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power pulled back the curtain on the real costs of the corporate entity and the holy grail of shareholder value above product or service, its employees, customers, or location. Political, social, and environmental disasters including the current Coronavirus, laid bare systemic inequities and a looming global crisis of epic proportions. 
To appear relevant and current, big business slyly rebranded themselves as The New Corporation; socially conscious and purposeful superheroes ready to do battle often by masquerading immoral corporate actions and power grabs dressed up as saviors to pressing social initiatives. 
Bakan’s The New Corporation takes a scathing look at the whole ‘doing well by doing good’ movement, exploring how companies insidiously position themselves as ‘good corporate citizens’ without acknowledging the damage they cause.
Meanwhile it takes students like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai and locally, Western Canadian activists like Tzeporah Berman, Politicians like Chief Judy Wilson and Elizabeth May and more recently, after the book and film, passionate young men and women like Nova Stevens, the current Miss Universe Canada, who came to Canada as a refugee at 6, and helped get Emancipation Day recognized in Vancouver, and Canada. Globally, grassroots citizen movements were born or re-invigorated to address issues like CEO compensation in the face of huge gender and racial disparity, climate, food security, housing, aging and health care that can no longer be ignored. Even the very concept of democracy is in question given the combination of corporate and governmental global actions and inactions.

<h1>The Film: The New Corporation: </h1>
The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel It literally took the pandemic to unwrap a wrap for this film, as it became unfortunately, an even more necessary sequel than Joel Bakan and Jennifer Abbott could ever have imagined given the additional gamechangers of the end of the Trump term, US election events and COVID-19. The New Corporation traces the devastating consequences of a world perilously close to losing its foundation of democracy, a world remade in the corporation’s image-split between the primary responsibility (by definition) to the shareholder’s interests and the public good. Bakan and Abbott graphically connect the dots between then and now, including the cataclysmic changes within the timing of the making of the film because according to Bakan, of the “ways governments and corporations responded to it hit upon just about every one of our themes – privatization, economic and racial injustice, corporate greed.” Its final cut did not just leave us in despair but rather inspired us to keep forcing accountability with stories of resistancew we and change from around the world that demands both a thriving public and private sector.
Bakan added, “It’s really interesting to see how corporations – especially those that purport to embrace purpose and sustainability, ones that say they care – have pushed Trump to be even more Trump-ish. Major US corporations at the helm of the ‘new’ corporation movement continue to lobby for tax cuts and deregulation that disable governments from promoting the very social and environmental values they purport to care about. We allude to this in the film, andI provide chapter and verse in the book. So, yes Trump has given more carte blanche – but big business has pushed him to give even more than he might have.”
The film shows how corporations have become skilled at “camouflaging their activities, dressing up in shades of green and paying lip service to diversity and innovation.” The book and film could easily spawn many more necessary sequels while delineating a bird’s eye view of these chaotic times. The onus is thrown back on us to make the necessary connections and to actively seek meaningful solutions if we want to leave our children and grandchildren a real future.

Asked why Adam was excited to moderate Joel’s talk....
“Presenting Joel's book and film, The New Corporation, resonates with me personally. All Canadians should be deeply concerned with our relationship to government and business and the ethical crossroads we find ourselves at in a technologically-driven world that rewards private companies at the expense of the individual. 
How we chart a path forward in the future following the pandemic is inevitably up to us, but Bakan's book illustrates ways in which we as individuals can monitor and protect the environment, keep corporations in check and remain diligent and determined on a local and international level to providing a better future for the next generation”.

Adam Elliott Segal is a writer, editor, journalist and author. Winner of the 2020 Toronto Star Short Story Contest for his story “Burning” and nominated for a 2020 National Magazine Award for “The Dahlia,” he has published award-winning work in leading Canadian magazines and newspapers over the last two decades and lived and worked in Canada’s three largest cities. Passionate about social justice and social issues, he has written about black market adoption for Maisonneuve, genetics and DNA for This magazine and his byline has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Province, Reader’s Digest, enRoute, Chatelaine and VICE. 
He has held editorial and administrative roles at Hot Docs International Film Festival, Sportsnet, Spafax and holds a Combined Honours Degree in Comparative and English Literature from the University of Western Ontario and diplomas from the Humber School for Writers and the Ryerson Publishing program. Ten years after the release of The Corporation, which remains the most successful Canadian documentary ever made, The New Corporation’s genesis rose from an initial meeting in January 2015 between Producer Trish Dolman and members of the team behind the original 2003 film about the possibility of a sequel. Producer Betsy Carson joined the team that same month and Writer/Director Joel began writing the treatment for the sequel based on ideas he had been formulating for his follow-up book The New Corporation: How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy. 
Research, development, fundraising and preliminary interviews took place from January 2015 through 2017. In 2017, Associate Producer Dawn Brett-Hauschild joined the team to secure the core interviews for the project and director Jennifer Abbott (co-director and Editor of The Corporation) re-joined the team as Director and supervising editor. With extensive and ongoing research completed and development shooting secured, and DOP Ian Kerr on board, principal photography began in early 2018 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. 
Filming took place for the next two years around the world at the following locations: Vancouver, BC Berkeley, CA Boston, MA Los Angeles, CA New York, NY Portland, OR San Francisco, CA Seattle, WA London, UK Brussels, Belgium Davos, Switzerland Nairobi, Kenya Barcelona, Spain Sydney, Australia. 
Post-production began concurrently with filming. In 2018, editor Peter Roeck came on board to help craft Joel’s treatment into a feature documentary structure. Sound Designer Velcrow Ripper and Composer Matt Robertson worked closely with the editing team throughout 2019 and 2020. Principal archival researcher Kate Lingley sourced more than 1100 clips for the film over the 2 years of the edit. The film was completed in mid-August of 2020.

<h1>I watched every single James Bond movie. </h1>
 <h2>Yes. Every. Single. One. </h2>
So quarantine has got me losing my mind and I needed something to binge. A friend suggested going with all the James Bond movies. Great! I watched them when I was younger with my father (who is a serious Bond fan). So I was down, it was going to take lots of time and that’s exactly what I needed during quarantine. 

Fun fact: There are 25 movies in total (including one that is not “technically” a Bond film but stars Sean Connery). So yes. I watched them all! It took me 2 long weeks and boy, was it ever an adventure. 
I would not tell anyone to binge all 25 unless you really REALLY want too, then that’s on you. 
In this mag I am going to tell you the top 10 movies to watch (which FYI is still a shit ton of movies). 
So read on for the low down :)

<h1>Sean Connery. </h1>
<h2>The original. </h2>
So you can’t start a Bond marathon without the first movie: Dr. No, 1962. 
This was Sean Connerys first real acting role. He was previously an extra, or muscle man on various shows before being cast as Bond. 
As a warning, it is super racist and uses women as objects. If you look past all that it’s a great action movie that sets up so many aspects of Bond movies to come. Remember, it was filmed in 1962 (lots has changed since then, thank gosh!)
I would then proceed to watch two more of Sean’s movies as Bond: Goldfinger, 1964 and Diamonds are Forever, 1971. 
Goldfinger is an iconic movie, and so many scenes and aspects of it have been used in Bond movies since. It’s an important piece of James Bond cinematic history. You also can’t forget how absolutely catchy the theme song is! 
Next would be Diamonds are Forever which was Sean’s final official movie as Bond. The story isn’t as enthralling and critics have said that Connery gave a subpar performance but I liked it. I find it particularly interesting that you can see how much has changed with the writing and the technology from his first movie. 
As a warning I should let you know that I have skipped a few movies (and the train wreck that was On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 1969). They had replaced Connery with George Lazenby, who was a great Bond but it truly doesn’t tie in to any of the other movies.

<h1>Roger Moore. </h1>
<h2>The heart throb. Don’t even @ me</h2>
One of my favorite Bond’s was Roger Moore, I am not entirely sure why, but I feel like he was exactly what Bond was supposed to be. It also helped that the writing was better, and so were the props. 
We have officially entered the 70s and now women are no longer objects but spies that help out 007. It is an upgrade, so I’ll take it. 
What Roger Moore movies MUST you watch? The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977 and A View to a Kill, 1985. I feel like these two movies really show how charming he was as Bond and also have the best story lines (aka the most “believable”) 
The Spy Who Loved Me was one of my favorite films. It features a lady spy who was so headstrong and brave and I really respected her character. You also have the introduction of the classic muscleman Jaws, he’s in two movies and you couldn’t miss watching him! 
A View to a Kill was his final movie as a Bond, and I really felt like he left it in such a high note. You also have Christopher Walken as the villain (!!!) So obviously this made it on the list.

<h1>Pierce Brosnan</h1>
<h2>Damn, he’s a daddy. </h2>

The next James Bond in our list is of course Pierce Brosnan (you get thirsty just reading his name lol). 
As a side note: in between Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan there was Timothy Dalton. Dalton had two horrible movies, and I truly would not suggest anyone to watch them. Silly story line, horrible acting, they do not mesh with the franchise at all. 
Okay! So diving right in, I would watch two of Brosnan’s movies: The World is not Enough, 1999 and Die Another Day, 2002. 
These are Brosnan’s second last and last movies as Bond (in total he did 4). 
Both of these movies are completely star studded with Halle Berry, Denise Richards and Judy Dench joining the cast. If you haven’t figured out already I love a strong female ensemble. 
I feel like these two movies are a turning point for the Bond films, things are more serious and the story lines flow much more smoothly. I also enjoyed Brosnan as Bond for his slick humor that I think worked the best for all the Bonds. 
The World is not Enough, was such an interesting film for me because (spoiler alert, oops) the bad guy, for the first time, was a woman. 
Both these movies also incorporate a lot of the history of Bond, even touching upon past props from the Connery days which I really appreciated. Who doesn’t love some classic nostalgia?

<h1>Daniel Craig </h1>
<h2>Mic drop. </h2>

The final Bond (so far) we have Craig picking up the name from 2006- 2020 (which he has said the final movie to come out will be his last, doing officially 5 movies). 
This new era of Bond is serious, all movies connect, and we have some insane special effects. These movies are the most classic, diverse and have you at the edge of your seat the entire time. 
I appreciate Craig as Bond because he brings something so different and unique to the role. He also does not play the role corny, or make himself out to be a womanizer. In one movie he doesn’t even sleep with the Bond girl!! (assuming that’s more the writing then the actor). 
Out of the four of Craig’s movies, I am going to suggest you watch 3: Casino Royale, 2006, Quantum of Solace, 2008 and the last Spectre, 2015. Skyfall, 2012 falls in the middle of these movies. Out of all of them I liked this one the least, and I felt like it should have taken place after Spectre. Many people will disagree with me, but again this is my opinion (and my mag!)
I found it interesting that they made Craig a new “character” with no history. The other Bond’s have been continuous and not acknowledged that they are different people. This new Bond has recently taken up the mantle of a “double 0” and is fresh (with no Moneypenny in sight).

<h1>So that is my James Bond must watch list!</h1>
I am located in Canada, and for some reason none of these movies are on any streaming sites (seriously @netflix where u @?)
I rented some on YouTube and I streamed some (oops). They are particularly easy to find though, just give a little search on google! 
These ten movies will take you a nice long time, especially during quarantine I know we need things to do.

Top 10 Bond Movies  — @undefined's mag on Magma

<h1>Quarantine Movie Madness!</h1>
So, we are all sitting at home trying to find things to watch and activities to do! For the longest time I have been meaning to watch all of Wes Anderson’s movies. 
They are such a giant part of pop culture, and I felt that I was missing out. I also couldn’t speak on them when chatting about movies, which gave me serious fomo (how millennial of me!)
So I have been in “isolation” and decided now is the perfect time to stream all his movies!
Everyone should be isolating/ social distancing, so if you are desperate for a fun movie watching marathon I would go with Wes’s films!
In this mag I am going to go through all 9 of his films, giving you a quick synopsis and which I enjoyed and which I did not!

<h1>Bottle Rocket, 1996</h1>
Wes Anderson’s first feature film! Fun fact: it was originally a short.

This movie was rather odd, there wasn’t really a point and the story line was al over the place. I am not even sure how to give a proper synopsis other than three friends plan robberies to impress a con man. 
I would not watch this movie again, but if you are going to do a proper Wes Anderson marathon than it is imperative you start with his first. 
You can see the ground work for this director style in this. I just wish the story line was a little clearer with a point. It’s one of those movies that when you finish it you are left thinking “huh”

<h1>Rushmore, 1998</h1>
Jason Schwartzman with braces and pimples is a hilarious site to see. He plays a high school student that falls in love with a teacher twice his age. 
It was slow in the beginning, and gets a little lost around the middle but it was a funny coming of age story. 
You also have the introduction of Bill Murray, who becomes a staple in all of Anderson’s movies. 
Something that is great about all of Anderson’s movies is that they don’t go longer than an hour forty-five. So even if you are not truly enjoying the flick it’s not too long. 
Rushmore was cute, although I would not watch it again. It made sense and was cute but that’s all it was. It did not leave a lasting impression on me, as the viewer.

<h1>The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001</h1>
An unforgettable movie with an astounding performance from Gwyneth Paltrow

I would say this is truly what put Anderson on the map. The story of a dysfunctional family unit; audiences all over the world can connect with some aspect of this family, in 2001 and in the present. 
The classic staples of an Anderson film are present: the Wilson brothers, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston. The story line is fun and enthralling and keeps you hooked the entire time.

In popular culture this movie is also hugely important. I’m sure you have seen the halloween couples costume of Margot and Richie Tenenbaum. 
This has got to be one of my favourite Anderson movies, and each time I watch it I notice something else. 
Pro tip: when watching this movie, or any of Anderson’s films you need to pay attention. They are fast so stay off your phone!

<h1>The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, 2004</h1>

I truly don’t even know where to start with this movie. I can say that it is so wacky and the story line is all over the place. The character development is awful, and story lines are not finished. 
Based on a “Jacques Cousteau” type character, Murray brings his awkward and quirky acting skills to a very confusing movie that leaves viewers (me especially!) scratching their head. 
I would not suggest watching this film, I can see Anderson’s film style growing but the story line of this movie is awful.

A tale of three brothers, who have not spoken since their fathers funeral. Each is having their own problem in life, and they all meet on a spiritual journey through India. 
This movie was very impactful to me, from the beautiful background of India to them looking for something more to life then the hand they were dealt.

As always Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman wholeheartedly commit to their roles. Each one gives an amazing performance and you truly connect with these three siblings. 
Anderson creates such conflicted and intricate stories focusing on different aspects of the family unit. I really enjoy the films that focus around family because he doesn’t sugar coat anything, it’s raw and real.

<h1>Fantastic Mr. Fox, 2009</h1>
Probably one of my least favourite of Anderson’s movies, this story is based off Roald Dahl’s books. I had never read this story so I had no idea of what was to come!
It was rather long, and silly with not much of a point. I would not suggest watching this movie, because I will definitely not be watching it again. 
I did find the animation aspect very cool to watch! All in all this was not a great film.

Moonrise Kingdom, wow I truly don’t know where to begin. A tale of two lovers although they are aged 12. Set in an island utopia in 1965, the story focuses on two misfit kids who fall in love. Both feel ostracized from their current lives, and run away together. But of course madness ensues, it is a Wes Anderson film after all! 
It is a star studded ensemble with Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Bruce Willis joining the regular Anderson crew. 
I am not entirely sure where this was filmed but it took me right back to my childhood spending summers at camp and in Muskoka. I would say an additional character in this movie is nature and how imperative it plays to what goes on in the story. 
As always this movie really showed the true side of family, love and what happens when people put their differences aside for the greater good. I love a happy ending and this one made my heart swell.

I adore this movie! The colours, the sets! The absolute ridiculous story line that keeps you hooked! The satire of WWII, juxtaposed with the beautiful scenery, it is so impactful. 
I had originally watched this movie in 2014, which was the beginning of my love for movies. They’re just so much fun, and Anderson proved that with this film. 
Set in the past, this movie is like a different world from our own. It celebrates all the things from history that we have taken advantage of, or have completely gotten rid of. The lobby boy and his mentor is what this story revolves around. The hi jinx that follow is wild; there is murder , love, and a great fortune at stake. 
If you are to watch any of Wes Anderson’s movies, it must be this one. It’s a feel good tale, that keeps you at the edge of your seat!

<h1>Isle Of Dogs, 2018</h1>
The cutest animated movie of all time!! I love dogs, I actually have three at home (one being a puppy!) So this movie was right up my alley.

Taking place in a fictional town in Japan, this movie is about taking all the dogs in the city and putting them on an island. The story is about a young kid who is fighting to find his dog and bring all the dogs back to the town. 
It is interesting because the human characters (all but two) speak in Japanese, without the option of subtitles. The viewer must assume what the characters are saying. 
I adored this movie, and as the final film of Wes Anderson’s (current films) it was amazing to end on such a great note.

If you didn’t watch The Academy Awards and you are feeling incredibly out of the loop do not worry! I am here to tell you exactly what you NEED to watch to stay on top of pop culture, and which movies to skip! 
This year the movies were fantastic, so let’s dive in!

<h1>Jojo Rabbit</h1>
<h2>My personal favorite!</h2>
I believe this to be one of the best of all the movies. The message is so important, especially in this day and age. It is based on the novel Caging Skies, which is why it picked up the Oscar for best adapted screenplay!
Following a young boy named Jojo, the film uses dark humor and satire to tell the story of this boy and his imaginary friend Hitler. A rather dark tale, Jojo finds a girl hidden in his attic. 
An interesting take on how people follow, how frightening propaganda can be, and how at the end of the day we are all humans and should respect and love each other no matter race or religion. 
Not wanting to ruin it for you, this film will have lasting effect on how you see the world. I think it’s an important story and one which everyone should watch!

<h1>Parasite </h1>
<h2>Wow</h2>
Honestly, I had no idea what I was going into when I started this movie. It was a wild ride, and so unpredictable which is nice in 2020!
It is a South Korean film, which is subtitled. It follows the story of a family of con artists that infiltrate a wealthy family. 
With twists and turns there is murder, romance, mystery and a realistic ending. It takes a serious look at the class differences that divide South Korea and the difficult way in which people live. 
After watching this movie I could not stop thinking about the story for days after completing. Not wanting to ruin it for you, all I can see is this is a must watch.

<h1>Once Upon A Time In Hollywood </h1>
<h2>Tarantino’s take on 1969</h2>
I take a personal interest in the Manson Murders (as a true crime addict) so I couldn’t have been more excited to see what Tarantino was going to do in this movie. I was not disappointed. 
In true Tarantino fashion, it’s a slow beginning to build up to the giant explosion of an ending. 
Following a washed up actor and his stunt double, this story has Brad Pitt shirtless (UM YES) Margot Robbie as the stunning Sharon Tate and of course Leo. 
Telling the tale of the tragic events of the Manson Murders, Tarantino takes his own twist in what one wishes happened.

<h1>Joker</h1>
<h2>A piece that focuses on mental health</h2>
An incredible film that showcases mental health and those who feel different, disconnected and as outsiders in the world. 
A very different comic book movie, Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for this role. 
Words can’t describe how this movie made me feel, it allows you to see the dark side of humanity and encourages you to be kind to everyone.

<h1>Judy</h1>
<h2>Renee Zellweger gives a performance of a lifetime </h2>

Judy focuses on the sad story of Judy Garland, I best knew her as Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz and of course Eliza Minelli’s mother. 
The movie begins thirty years after her breakout role, during her stay in London performing her hits. 
It has flashbacks of how awful life was for her, how she was put on a regiment of diet pills and other prescription drugs to keep her awake. 
It’s a tragic story that ends in her death. It really shows how unhealthy growing up in Hollywood was in the 60s and the difficulties she went through.

A gift to us all, they are able to transport us to worlds we can only dream about. If you can I would watch every movie from this years awards, but in this mag I have outlined my fave favorite flicks!
