Joel Bakan is a professor of law at the University of British Columbia, and a legal scholar and commentator. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, Bakan has law degrees from Oxford, Dalhousie, and Harvard. A frequent recipient of awards for both his writing and teaching, Bakan has worked on landmark legal cases and government policy, and served regularly as a media commentator, appearing on national television and radio. He is a popular and accomplished public speaker who has addressed business, government, academic, and activist audiences in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.
If you have not already seen the film or read the book, The New Corporation, or the original The Corporation, we encourage you to do so at some point. The film was long- listed for an Oscar and the book is currently up for the BC and Yukon Book award. What is necessary, is to get some important insights into the green-washing of “new and presumably improved” Corporations. How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy
The world has changed a lot since 2003 when The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power pulled back the curtain on the real costs of the corporate entity and the holy grail of shareholder value above product or service, its employees, customers, or location. Political, social, and environmental disasters including the current Coronavirus, laid bare systemic inequities and a looming global crisis of epic proportions. 
To appear relevant and current, big business slyly rebranded themselves as The New Corporation; socially conscious and purposeful superheroes ready to do battle often by masquerading immoral corporate actions and power grabs dressed up as saviors to pressing social initiatives. 
Bakan’s The New Corporation takes a scathing look at the whole ‘doing well by doing good’ movement, exploring how companies insidiously position themselves as ‘good corporate citizens’ without acknowledging the damage they cause.
Meanwhile it takes students like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai and locally, Western Canadian activists like Tzeporah Berman, Politicians like Chief Judy Wilson and Elizabeth May and more recently, after the book and film, passionate young men and women like Nova Stevens, the current Miss Universe Canada, who came to Canada as a refugee at 6, and helped get Emancipation Day recognized in Vancouver, and Canada. Globally, grassroots citizen movements were born or re-invigorated to address issues like CEO compensation in the face of huge gender and racial disparity, climate, food security, housing, aging and health care that can no longer be ignored. Even the very concept of democracy is in question given the combination of corporate and governmental global actions and inactions.

<h1>The Film: The New Corporation: </h1>
The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel It literally took the pandemic to unwrap a wrap for this film, as it became unfortunately, an even more necessary sequel than Joel Bakan and Jennifer Abbott could ever have imagined given the additional gamechangers of the end of the Trump term, US election events and COVID-19. The New Corporation traces the devastating consequences of a world perilously close to losing its foundation of democracy, a world remade in the corporation’s image-split between the primary responsibility (by definition) to the shareholder’s interests and the public good. Bakan and Abbott graphically connect the dots between then and now, including the cataclysmic changes within the timing of the making of the film because according to Bakan, of the “ways governments and corporations responded to it hit upon just about every one of our themes – privatization, economic and racial injustice, corporate greed.” Its final cut did not just leave us in despair but rather inspired us to keep forcing accountability with stories of resistancew we and change from around the world that demands both a thriving public and private sector.
Bakan added, “It’s really interesting to see how corporations – especially those that purport to embrace purpose and sustainability, ones that say they care – have pushed Trump to be even more Trump-ish. Major US corporations at the helm of the ‘new’ corporation movement continue to lobby for tax cuts and deregulation that disable governments from promoting the very social and environmental values they purport to care about. We allude to this in the film, andI provide chapter and verse in the book. So, yes Trump has given more carte blanche – but big business has pushed him to give even more than he might have.”
The film shows how corporations have become skilled at “camouflaging their activities, dressing up in shades of green and paying lip service to diversity and innovation.” The book and film could easily spawn many more necessary sequels while delineating a bird’s eye view of these chaotic times. The onus is thrown back on us to make the necessary connections and to actively seek meaningful solutions if we want to leave our children and grandchildren a real future.

Adam Elliott Segal is a writer, editor, journalist and author. Winner of the 2020 Toronto Star Short Story Contest for his story “Burning” and nominated for a 2020 National Magazine Award for “The Dahlia,” he has published award-winning work in leading Canadian magazines and newspapers over the last two decades and lived and worked in Canada’s three largest cities. Passionate about social justice and social issues, he has written about black market adoption for Maisonneuve, genetics and DNA for This magazine and his byline has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Province, Reader’s Digest, enRoute, Chatelaine and VICE. 
He has held editorial and administrative roles at Hot Docs International Film Festival, Sportsnet, Spafax and holds a Combined Honours Degree in Comparative and English Literature from the University of Western Ontario and diplomas from the Humber School for Writers and the Ryerson Publishing program. Ten years after the release of The Corporation, which remains the most successful Canadian documentary ever made, The New Corporation’s genesis rose from an initial meeting in January 2015 between Producer Trish Dolman and members of the team behind the original 2003 film about the possibility of a sequel. Producer Betsy Carson joined the team that same month and Writer/Director Joel began writing the treatment for the sequel based on ideas he had been formulating for his follow-up book The New Corporation: How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy. 
Research, development, fundraising and preliminary interviews took place from January 2015 through 2017. In 2017, Associate Producer Dawn Brett-Hauschild joined the team to secure the core interviews for the project and director Jennifer Abbott (co-director and Editor of The Corporation) re-joined the team as Director and supervising editor. With extensive and ongoing research completed and development shooting secured, and DOP Ian Kerr on board, principal photography began in early 2018 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. 
Filming took place for the next two years around the world at the following locations: Vancouver, BC Berkeley, CA Boston, MA Los Angeles, CA New York, NY Portland, OR San Francisco, CA Seattle, WA London, UK Brussels, Belgium Davos, Switzerland Nairobi, Kenya Barcelona, Spain Sydney, Australia. 
Post-production began concurrently with filming. In 2018, editor Peter Roeck came on board to help craft Joel’s treatment into a feature documentary structure. Sound Designer Velcrow Ripper and Composer Matt Robertson worked closely with the editing team throughout 2019 and 2020. Principal archival researcher Kate Lingley sourced more than 1100 clips for the film over the 2 years of the edit. The film was completed in mid-August of 2020.

<h1>The balance between work and play </h1>
It’s at times extremely hard to balance building a brand and doing the things you love. It’s even harder to take the things you love and build a brand around them. It’s a risky venture. You can easily pigeonhole your self. The people you share interest with will fall into one of two categories. 

1. Your interest is large and has a large base of people that share interest in this activity. 

2. Your interest is small and a small base of people share this activity as a interest. 

Clearly the second category isn’t ideal for someone building a brand around something they consider fun but it’s all about what you consider fun right? If you are doing what you love you will succeed no mater what right?? I personally like to invest that energy into my project. In many ways I feel my brand is sort of a unicorn. I’m lucky that my hobby is shared by millions of people around the world but the more the shop is in existence the more I fine that even people who have never spent a night under the stars connect with it. People who have never even seen a adventure sprinter before. Even my new apparel is crossing borders with the fans. ￼i hope things continue on this path:) less of a story and more of a vent today haha but stoked to put it in a mag.

Over the last year we have all found our selves in a interesting predicament. Covid has caused some major restructuring in certain markets. My last Magma mag focused on how my imagery is evolving. How sometimes change is ￼necessary in order to reconnect with creativity when the our passion becomes stagnant. What I didn’t cover in that mag was the fact that I’ve been a Barber my whole life. Much like photo, barbering is a art. It’s something I use to get the creative juices flowing. It’s also a therapeutic outlet for my self and my clients. A place where we can talk about our world in a comfortable environment without having to feel judgment. Ultimately it’s a place that you should leave looking and feeing amazing. Covid took that for almost a year. Our safe space of conversation and relaxation disappeared into a world of stress and solitude like a harsh winter storm. 
 For those unfamiliar my name is Ryan Rich and I had several barbershops in LA up until a law change forced my buy out at the end of 2018. Although I stayed behind the chair at a shop located on Rose ave in Venice beach I knew I craved different. I was feeling like the conversation with friends in the chair was the only part of the day that I truly looked forward to which isn’t a good feeling when your job is to perform service and the service come secondary to the conversation￼. I knew it was time for a change. Even throughout 2019 I was trying to figure out what my new move was. I craved environment that was solely ￼mine, one on one, and sparked creativity.￼
 I had designed a floor plan for mobile Barbershop early on in 2019. The project overall was unrealistically expensive for a single chair Barbershop. I was looking into other spaces as viable options to put a single chair Barbershop.￼ I found a few locations that would fit my needs but never ended up pulling the trigger on the paperwork... 
 Then the world changed in a dramatic way. Covid forced mass closures￼￼￼￼ of the hair industry. All of a sudden a single chair Barbershop on wheels didn’t seem all that expensive of an idea. I went out and bought a sprinter van. ￼￼

I had a lot of familiarity with sprinter vans from my adventures and road trips over the years. It was actually a dream vehicle of mine. You can do so much with the sprinters. You can make them in the rugged off-road beasts or long glide tried and true roadmaster campers. Through this love of the sprinter chassis I had learned quite a bit about what exactly you need to have to run a successful power set up, insulation, and creature comforts￼￼￼￼￼￼.

Now my dream of having a sprinter was manifesting in a different way. 
 I wasn’t ready to separate from my dream. I needed my sprinter to be a fully functioning mobile barbershop￼￼￼ and adventure rig. I called my good friend ran over a van speed shop in Costa Mesa California to run my idea past him. he had never done a Mobil Barbershop before it was open ears to hearing my idea and with the solid floorplan and his knowledge of these incredible machines we would embark on one of the most unique barbershops the world had ever seen￼￼￼.

Upon completion we have been hit with such an overwhelming amount of support from not only the community but strangers on social media who simply have invested into the project and find it exciting, new, and different.

I finally have a space this fully moldable and impossible to get Stale in. It’s pure creativity in the truest truest form in the work coming out of it shows that. I’m located in Venice Beach on Abbot Kinney three days a week￼￼.

Blogging can be a great way to grow sales for your business over the long-term.
But what if you have a local business? Does it still make sense to invest in blogging if you’re not trying to attract people from all over the world?
The short answer is: Yes.
Blogging does offer an opportunity for a local business. Maybe you’re a restaurant, retailer, dentist, etc. You can definitely see benefits from a long-term blogging strategy.
Here are some things to consider…

<h2>1. Long Term SEO Benefit</h2>
One of the main reasons any business starts a long-term blogging effort is for the SEO benefit, which is rankings on search engines like Google that bring people to your website.

Each blog post has the potential to rank for certain search phrases and keywords. When this occurs the posts can bring in traffic. This traffic typically doesn’t convert right away to a new customer. But sometimes it does. A person may read a post and remember your brand name. Then maybe when they are in buying mode for your service they search your name and find your website or maybe they just go straight to your location.

But over time you generally see a boost to other pages on your website, such as your homepage. The search engines are smart and it seems that one of the things they consider if your brand reputation. And if you’re helping lots of people with great blog content that the search engine loves and gives good rankings the search engine is also likely to rank your non-blog pages well.

Say you’re a dentist. When someone searches for a dentist in your city they see results. For argument sake let’s say every dentist is equal in every way, but you have been blogging for years and providing lots of helpful content. Search engines may use this to determine that your practice is most worthy of the highest ranking.

<h2>2. Content for Multiple Channels</h2>
A great thing about blog content is that you can reuse it on other channels.
Today, many businesses have an email newsletter and one or two social media profiles on sites like Instagram and Facebook.
For email newsletters, you can include the links to your new blog posts. You can also use some of the content in your blogs right in your newsletters. There is a chance that your email subscribers aren’t reading all of your blogs.
On social media, you can link to the blog posts you publish. This can generate a little traffic and sometimes a lot. But the social sites and apps typically want to keep their users. They don’t want them to leave to other sites. So they encourage native content, which is content that can be consumed right on their platform.
But you can use your blog content and post right on social sites and apps. You can use snippets from a blog post and post it right on Facebook.

<h2>3. Brand Reputation</h2>
We kind of looked at this earlier, but it’s worth mentioning again in a little more detail.
In general, having a blog is a way to help your target audience. If they are looking for information in your industry and you’re providing that information you’re providing a service. You’re helping them. Over the long-term that is a great way to build a strong brand reputation.
People like to work with other people that have good reputations and that have helped them in the past.

<h2>What To Blog About</h2>
In general, the best blogging strategy over the long run is to identify questions your audience is asking and providing answers with your blog posts. This is even something Google specifically states about their rankings. That’s what they aim to do with their rankings and if you aim to do the same you’re aligning your strategy with theirs.
You can listen for questions your existing customers are asking and use those to create titles for blog posts. You can look at popular blogs in your industry and look for popular themes and topics they’re covering. You can even look at forums and message boards to see what people are asking.
And there are some search engine tools you can use to find out what people are searching for and asking on sites like Google.

<h2>Conclusion</h2>
There are no guarantees with any marketing or sales strategy. Having a blog and even having a great blog doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get rankings and tons of traffic and sales. It’s also a challenge to stick to a regular blogging schedule. That’s why many businesses don’t do it. Or why many start and give up after a few months. But that’s also the opportunity. If your competition isn’t blogging it can be a way to stand out. Even in a local setting.

I’m not much of a writer. I’ve enjoyed it throughout my scholastic career as a challenge to my own struggling attention span, but I’ve found my story telling solitude via other outlets. Photos and designs were always more my speed, allowing for my thoughts to express themselves in their rawest form, no spell checking or formalities required. This passion for media and an awkward relationship with literature has ironically brought us here. 
2020 was the year of Magma for me. The product you’re reading this on was once a simple idea in my head. Brewing into a tangible plan that my team and I focused on for the last 2 and a half years. With plans to fully lunch and dominate in 2020, we put everything on the line and in one basket. With the unfortunate change in landscapes for our industry and every other, we were faced with challenges and feats that were not in the initial instruction manual for starting this company. 
With that we pushed forward. 
We made due with what we had for every challenge the economy and market threw at us. Every janky, duct taped solution we implemented was treated as if it were iron clad. Every relationship, even those that were near non existent, was viewed as life long and essential. We took what we had and made what we were. In the eyes of most that might be viewed as “surviving”. I look at it as Thriving. Without the proper outlook something so important to myself, my partner, team and investors would have evaporated into a pile of things to be written off during this year.
 Thankfully that’s not the case. At Magma we intend to use the substances of 2020 as fuel for the machine we’re driving. Taking from it the criticism, praise and content and immediately turning it into tangible progress. 
This platform was built for YOU. Whatever you make of it to benefit YOURSELF was and will always be our mission. From day 1 I’ve always viewed this product as something that will compliment whatever the user utilizes on a daily basis. I have never felt the need to “disrupt” or challenge others in our space for fear of limiting our opportunities and burning bridges to our success. And so far I could not be more proud of what Magma has become. 
With thousands of Mags published from over 50 countries, I have read some truly amazing stories. Some short and sweet, some visually heavy and others perfectly imperfect. Every single one of them has brought a smile to my face and pride to my team.
If there is anything to be taken from this ramble it’s that among the craziness we are all capable of powering through. It’s sometimes the sketchy, far fetched solutions that unfold into the most robust of plans. This year was the missing piece to our education of life and everyone had a different yet equally important textbook. Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your mission as there is nothing more important. Who knows what next year will look like. For better or worse Magma isn’t slowing down anytime soon. <h1>Worst. Press Release. Ever.</h1>
There's something going around this year.
It's contagious.
Your brand might have caught it, but it's the media who's getting sick of it.
2020 was a total sh*t show for many reasons, but I'm talking about the crap being passed off as press releases.
It's spreading like a virus, and lots of brands have succumb to this bug.
I can't explain, but I can help you fix it.
<h2>How to write a Press Release that doesn't suck</h2>
Hearing that your PR might suck is a tough pill to swallow. But you can nurse it back to health by making sure every press release has these essentials:
<ul>
 <li>Descriptive title that explains what's up in one sentence</li>
 <li>Embargo Day / Date / Time Zone</li>
 <li>Bullet point list of key newsworthy points, at top of PR</li>
 <li>Full press release text (preferably sans glowing marketing hyperbole)</li>
 <li>Key images, preferably embedded inside text where appropriate</li>
 <li>Contact info with phone number</li>
 <li>Download link or zipped attachment with all images</li>
</ul>
That's not a lot, right?!?
<h2>You'd be surprised how many people get it wrong</h2>
Let me expand on a few of these items.
EMBARGO: If you don't include the time AND time zone in your embargo, then someone's going to post it early and mess up your carefully crafted launch plans. And the media that didn't go first? They'll be pissed that someone else did, but that pissy-ness will be directed toward you for not laying out the rules.
Also helpful if you provide at least a day before the embargo is up. More technical information = more time needed to prepare.
DETAILS: If the written press release can't succinctly explain what's new or important, include charts, graphs and images to fill in the gaps. It's OK to leave out some of the super geekery, but things like price, availability, etc., are basic info that should be included.
It's OK to make us work to create a truly exceptional story, just don't make us ask for the basics.
CONTACT INFO: And if you're going to make us work for it, have people available. We're just as slammed as you, make it easy for us to call, message or email the people who can actually answer our questions...and make sure they reply.

IMAGES: Lastly, make sure your image download link works.
Actually, first, make sure you have actual images available to go with your story. (yes, you are interpreting that correctly...not every press release actually included product images this year)
Then, make sure we can actually download your images. Quickly, easily, without having to request permission. Seriously. 
<h2>If it doesn't kill ya...</h2>
A bad press release may not kill you, but it certainly doesn't make you stronger.
Don't make us sick. Or facepalm. Use the tips above to craft a solid (if basic) press release and start getting better coverage.

Quite simply, it works because of honesty.
It says what we're thinking, which isn't something you'd expect a corporation to say. But it's true, and it's funny to hear them present it so nonchalantly.
