<h1>Is surfing changing the path of sportsmanship?</h1>

Over the last 40 years sports have evolved in ways their originators, all stars and students never imagined. From MJ showing what athletic dominance is, to Tom Brady proving that age has no affect on ability or performance.
We have been fortunate enough as a generation to witness and experience athleticism in it’s rawest form. But measuring a sport’s progression is becoming less about the level of performance and more about what being an athlete within a sport means. 
Surfing has not changed much as a sport since the late 70’s when the modern idea of professional contests began. To this day not much is different on both the recreational and competitive level. As surfers we still frequent the same spots, chase the same swells and even ride similar boards to those that were surfed in the 80’s (the now default three fin “thruster” surfboard design was introduced by Simon Anderson in 1980). Of course the level of performance has gone through the roof with new maneuvers being introduced almost daily thanks to social media, but it’s the progress surfing has made from a cultural standpoint that has begun a whole new world for professional athletics.

<h1>Camaraderie </h1>
As long as sports have been around one thing has been certain, there will always be a winner and a loser. 
With competition soaring to new levels, competitive nature often follows suit with emotions and actions often showing through professional demeanor. What has occurred over the last 5 years of surfing though is something special. Opponents have become training partners, rivals have become friends and post loss anger has turned into support. All in all losers in the sport of surfing are transforming into non-winners. 
Why is this important? Surfing is one of the hardest sports to become a champion in. The grueling travel schedules, variable competitive conditions and international playing field is a breeding ground for potential anger from surfer to surfer. Over the years the sport has seen rivalries turn into aggressive and negative situations with some surfers exiting the world tour all together as a result. The progression of camaraderie within the sport has been parallel with the progression of talent and exposure. In doing so it seems as a rightful example other sports can follow.

<h1>Equal Pay / Opportunity</h1>
The past decade has seen advancements in women’s athletics on incredible levels. From brand sponsorships, exposure deals, and most importantly in level of play. 
With these pushes for female sport comes the grandest advancement of them all. Where does financial compensation equate to that of their male counterparts?
For professional women’s surfing, the answer is clear. The World Surf League, the professional surfing league, has made the prize purses of the women’s tour match that if the men’s. With this leap forward, the sport of women’s surfing has also grown immensely. Spotlights are being put on these amazing athletes in ways that were non existent just 5 years ago. Young girls are treating their surfing dreams the same as they would soccer, volleyball or basketball. And for the first time, professional surfing is gaining the attention of brands and experts from other sports that can help put surfing where it belongs, on the same stage as all other professional sports.
The WSL Championship Tour is now one of the only U.S. based sports requiring equal pay for both men and women.

<h1>Inclusion </h1>
With surfing being a tremendously international sport, there is still a mass barrier of inclusion within most communities. Aside from race, religion and ethnicity, surfers are often opposed to having outsiders of any kind paddling out at their local lineup. The “localism” mentality has caused immense turmoil at beaches worldwide and even extreme violence in some scenarios ( look up Luanda Bay Boys &amp; the Bra Boys). But movements at some select beaches have brought a wave of new surfers who want nothing more than to enjoy the same feeling that got us all hooked on surfing in the first place. 
Although most sports in this day and age are inclusive of all people, the fact that surfing, a predominantly white sport is branching out into demographics far from the norm is a thing of beauty.

The current state of the surfing industry is a unique and specialized situation. We have the rare opportunity to see a sport once synonymous with counter culture, extreme individuality and inferior career paths become a solidified sport amongst those we are raider to partake in. School surf teams, Olympic dreams and fame and fortune are all part of the program, but it’s the powerful progression that will ultimately make surfing a household concept.

<h1>The Year is 1970...</h1>
Malibu is quiet, tranquil and raw. The air is 75°, the surf is 3-4ft and the sun is making it’s last impact on a textbook California Day. Perched in the hills above the famous Malibu Pier, I admire the ocean below and the lack of intruding noise that the Santa Monica Mountains provide. 
In the distance a rumble appears. Two motorcycles come into frame, getting louder and faster by the second, carving a trail that’s barely visible. It’s brothers <a href="https://instagram.com/reidharper16?igshid=1fd70ykx8tgcu">Reid</a> &amp; <a href="https://instagram.com/lifeof_riley?igshid=6joh43khyhis">Riley</a> Harper making the best of a Thursday afternoon on their Triumph Bonnevilles. They are bar to bar, weaving through drought stricken dirt causing a trailing cloud that can’t seem to catch them. They make it the to top of an overlook, shut their engines off and breathe. The scene is once again quiet with the occasional wind and cricket interference. They look at each other and with a nod and not a word spoken they kick their engines over and ride off again with nothing to do but twist their throttles.
Ok. Maybe the year is 2021, but the vibe and details are dead on. By far one of the most fun shoots I’ve done in a while.

<h1>2020.</h1>

I’m not much of a writer. I’ve enjoyed it throughout my scholastic career as a challenge to my own struggling attention span, but I’ve found my story telling solitude via other outlets. Photos and designs were always more my speed, allowing for my thoughts to express themselves in their rawest form, no spell checking or formalities required. This passion for media and an awkward relationship with literature has ironically brought us here. 
2020 was the year of Magma for me. The product you’re reading this on was once a simple idea in my head. Brewing into a tangible plan that my team and I focused on for the last 2 and a half years. With plans to fully lunch and dominate in 2020, we put everything on the line and in one basket. With the unfortunate change in landscapes for our industry and every other, we were faced with challenges and feats that were not in the initial instruction manual for starting this company. 
With that we pushed forward. 
We made due with what we had for every challenge the economy and market threw at us. Every janky, duct taped solution we implemented was treated as if it were iron clad. Every relationship, even those that were near non existent, was viewed as life long and essential. We took what we had and made what we were. In the eyes of most that might be viewed as “surviving”. I look at it as Thriving. Without the proper outlook something so important to myself, my partner, team and investors would have evaporated into a pile of things to be written off during this year.
 Thankfully that’s not the case. At Magma we intend to use the substances of 2020 as fuel for the machine we’re driving. Taking from it the criticism, praise and content and immediately turning it into tangible progress. 
This platform was built for YOU. Whatever you make of it to benefit YOURSELF was and will always be our mission. From day 1 I’ve always viewed this product as something that will compliment whatever the user utilizes on a daily basis. I have never felt the need to “disrupt” or challenge others in our space for fear of limiting our opportunities and burning bridges to our success. And so far I could not be more proud of what Magma has become. 
With thousands of Mags published from over 50 countries, I have read some truly amazing stories. Some short and sweet, some visually heavy and others perfectly imperfect. Every single one of them has brought a smile to my face and pride to my team.
If there is anything to be taken from this ramble it’s that among the craziness we are all capable of powering through. It’s sometimes the sketchy, far fetched solutions that unfold into the most robust of plans. This year was the missing piece to our education of life and everyone had a different yet equally important textbook. Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your mission as there is nothing more important. Who knows what next year will look like. For better or worse Magma isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

<h1>The Nā Pali Coast</h1>
Spanning 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore, the Napali Coast is a sacredplacedefined byextraordinary natural beauty. These emerald-hued cliffs with razor-sharp ridges tower above the Pacific Ocean, revealing beautiful beaches and waterfalls that plummet to the lush valley floor. The rugged terrain appears much as it did centuries ago when Hawaiian settlements flourished in these deep, narrow valleys, existing only on the food they could grow and the fish they could catch. There are many ways to explore the Napali Coast, we decided to view it by helicopter and by boat as it allowed us to really capture the beauty from the different viewpoints.

Mammoth Mountain

<h1>THIS VIEW</h1>
I often ask myself what truly brings me solitude. 
In my mind, happiness and solitude sometimes do not go together. Happiness is a feeling while solitude is a location. A place you can hang out at for a bit without pondering your next move or some list you need to tackle.
Looking out the window of a car and seeing nothing synthetic or structural, only mountains in the background and nature in the foreground. 
That to me is pure solitude. You’re going somewhere yet your destination is a blank canvas. Very few things can easily provide that feeling quite like the mountains.
After 6 months of the Covid Circus with no definitive end in sight, I decided to go search for some solitude in the place I know it exists.

<h1>Getting away doesn’t always have to be Far.</h1>
Escaping to the mountains doesn’t always entail a cumbersome travel itinerary. Sometimes it’s as easy as a 4 hour drive.
Mammoth Mountain is roughly 300 miles outside of Los Angeles. It’s a world renowned ski resort due to its heavy snowfall measurements and proximity to the city, but during the summer is really when it showcases it’s talents.

If you feel the need to experience some fresh air, ignore your emails and get in touch with nature just hop in your car and go.

<h1>The reason we came up here besides the getaway was to Mountain Bike.</h1>
Mammoth is home to some of the best and most challenging man-made bike trails in the country. The same team that builds and maintains their ski runs and terrain parks in the winter, puts in equal effort to make some amazing and sometimes insane bike park obstacles in the summer.

<h1>The Mountains are a safe place to expand your horizons.</h1>

Regardless of your stance on guns, there’s nothing more fun than going to the shooting range. It’s a great way to hone your strength and challenge your focus. 
If you’ve never shot before, mammoth is a great place to try it for the first time. There’s endless open area and ranges to safely do it and many places to find an expert to take you if you don’t have your own equipment.
We chose to go at sunset and close out a great day of riding.

Always remember to shoot in a safe place, using your own or properly registered equipment and doing so with experts present. My friends are enthusiasts who take great pride in ensuring their equipment is perfect and the safety at the range is flawless.

<h1>Can’t go to the outdoors without a little off-roading.</h1>
My fiends and I love having fun. Almost to a fault. Of all the things we do nothing brings more of a smile to our faces than taking the trucks to places normal vehicles won’t survive.
In the area around Mammoth there are 100’s of miles of open trails and land that you can safely explore with a 4 wheel drive truck of any size.

When traveling out to these harsh areas, always remember to take it easy and have safe communication devices in case you get stuck.

<h1>Until Next Time.</h1>

All good things must come to an end. Even solitude. 
Beautiful thing about solitude is once you find it and learn how to use it, it will always be where you left it last. 
The power that specific solitude contains is pretty rad. Whether you need something to look forward to or a personal reward to motivate you, solitude is the greatest discovery one can make.
My solitude is up there amongst the trees, the lakes, the trails and the rocks. And I always know.

Hidden Hills

<h2>Some cities in the United States are famous for their unique attributes. </h2>
The mountain town of Aspen for example, has some of the best runs skiers can touch west of the Alps. Right out in front of most houses on the north shore of Oahu, are the most perfect and sacred waves surfers can dream of. The neighborhood of Pebble Beach, CA has 18 glorious holes that have been cemented onto the bucket lists of golfers around the world and directly out of the back gate of Hidden Hills, CA is a 2,983-acre park known as Ahmanson Ranch. 
Ahmanson is home to some of the best trails for Mountain Biking, Hiking and Horse Back Riding the country has to offer. For a number of years, the ranch was the center of some controversy due to its original owner, Washington Mutual Bank, having plans to develop 3000 homes, a golf course and a shopping plaza on the open property. Besides the concerns about congestion from the extra traffic on the 101 freeway and Valley Circle Rd, the area is also home to a few endangered and protected species of wildlife. In 2004 the bank instead sold the land to the state for a park and now it is open for riding and hiking. 
The ranch features nearly 30 miles of trails that are connected directly to Calabasas and Hidden Hills on one end and Simi Valley on the other, offering the residents a plethora of opportunities to get out and enjoy their activities, no matter their location. Ahmanson is so unique from many other parklands in the area because of its “untouched vibe” that other areas might have tainted with signage and fencing that feel more like manmade courses than a natural trails.

Although I grew up minutes away from Ahmanson, I never experienced it aside from a casual hike. I’ve always wanted to get a better understanding for it’s true beauty, so I figured I would take a mountain bike ride in the park to get a real experience. To do so I enlisted a local resident who has not only moved to the area for its abundance of trails but has made bike culture his occupation and life. <a href="https://instagram.com/belugaroar?igshid=z05162rux1jy">Robbie Schaefer</a> is a Hidden hills resident and owner of <a href="https://www.pedalersfork.com">Pedaler’s Fork</a> and 10 speed coffee, a restaurant and coffee shop in old town Calabasas that encompasses all that is cycling culture down to it’s full pro level bike shop in the back.
Robbie was thrilled that he would be my “Ahmanson Sherpa” as he rides there roughly 5 times a week and is so deeply passionate about how special the trails really are.

Per his request, I met Robbie at his house about an hour before sunset as he told me the only way to really have the full experience was to finish the ride just before dark. He set me up with a bike and helmet and we set out directly from his driveway. The ride started by getting a steady pedal going. We got some help from Robbie’s handlebar mounted wireless speaker setting a vibe in the background, like Soul Cycle but much better. Before long we arrived at the park entrance. The luxury of being able to ride there instead of needing to drive is very apparent once you experience it yourself. Upon entering the gates, it becomes obvious how untouched the area really is. Besides a lightly paved path that is intended in case of the need for a fire truck, the park is vast and empty for as far as the eye can see. One main trail that breaks off from the entrance is the one Robbie suggested we take. Known as the “Mary Westbrook Loop” the trail bends and climbs around a wide, flat valley called the “Lasky Mesa”. The mesa gives off a time travel feeling to before the San Fernando and Canejo Valleys were inhabited. The absence of any structures or civilization and the presence of hundred-year-old oak trees and unkept grass allows park goers to fully escape from reality.

<h2>“We kept great speed as the bikes handled turn after turn and soon we were happily cruising under an umbrella of oak trees.”</h2>

We started pedaling, Robbie at a much greater and fluid pace than myself. 
As we began to climb to the top of the mesa’s bordering range, the temperature began to drop with the aid from a nice breeze, and the scenery began to change. The originally plain setting started transforming into a more complex backdrop. We stopped for a water break at the summit where the trail forked, which was realistically no more than 2-300 ft higher than the beginning but felt like 5 times more. Robbie explained that the different avenues we could take would actually lead to different terrain and environments. “To the left down there you’ll end up on the north west corner of Ahmanson where it gets pretty hilly and there are trails that will drop you off near Agoura. Straight will take you on a trail all the way to the 118. To the right the vegetation gets thicker and it’s a great downhill ride all the way towards West Hills.” 
As a treat to my legs and stamina, we went right. Cruising down the tighter but descending trail was a total blast. We kept great speed as the bikes handled turn after turn and soon we were happily cruising under an umbrella of oak trees. The lower end of the park felt cooler and damper. Somehow with the extreme heat and dry climate of summer the trails and surrounding land felt to have retained some moisture. Robbie explained that due to the low point of Ahmanson and how many different mountains and parks surround it, water always ends up here. Another water break and a slight geography lesson later we were back to slow pedals and climbs. We were more than 4 miles in at this point. I followed and gave it my best shot to keep pace, even with my camera equipment on me.

As we approached the final summit of our loop, it became apparent that we were also nearing toward the edge of the park. Couples, kids, and individuals eagerly said hi to us as we passed by. Some were on bikes, others just walking and we even passed a woman taking her horse for a sundown stroll. Over a span of a mile and a half I got to experience how special this place really was. So many different people enjoying such a simple and cost free area. At the top we stopped and watched as the last bits of sun hid behind the neighboring range. The lighting instantly switched to the mood of an old western as we dropped into the final downhill section that ultimately dropped us right where we started. Minutes later we were pulling into Robbie’s driveway and with full satisfaction and joy he said, “See! that’s why I love this so much. It’s just a simple ride away from where I sleep, it’s such an amazing place.”

If you live within even a 30- minute drive from Ahmanson Ranch do yourself a favor and visit. Enjoy it, take it all in and just dedicate an hour of your week to escape civilization. You’ll thank me later.

Took an evening mountain bike ride to explore a local gem that I’ve never seen. — @undefined's mag on Magma

Surf Ranch

<h1>3 years ago,</h1>
I opened my phone on a December morning to something I was used to seeing on social media. A surf photo. Displayed in beautiful fashion upon my Instagram feed, posted by one of my favorite surf photographers <a href="https://instagram.com/toddglaser?igshid=1iuei6hgtgxd9">Todd Glaser</a>. The photo was of 11-time world champion and famed pro surfer Kelly Slater riding one of the most perfect waves I’ve ever seen. The wave wasn’t huge like Hawaii, blue like Tahiti or foamy like California. It was just simply glassy and perfect. Written in bold letters across the photo were the words “MAN MADE”. It was at that moment that I realized the wave I was looking at was in fact in a wave pool. 
Over the course of two years this mythical pool flooded the surf and sports industry with videos of professionals and brand owners all getting their chance at the wave. After magazines and websites prodded and begged, information was leaked that the pool was actually created by Kelly Slater with a portion of it owned by the World Surf League (<a href="https://www.worldsurfleague.com">WSL</a>), the surfing equivalent of the NBA. 
After a while of drooling over the wave I received a very interesting call. It was from my best friend Chad Weber who happens to work at the WSL, explaining that there was going to be a few days where the company and Kelly were going to invite the press and clients to experience the wave and that they wanted me to shoot and document the trip. In absolute shock, I said yes before I even had the chance to hear the best part, I was going to surf it too. 
3 weeks later Chad and I packed the car with our boards wetsuits and camera gear and headed out.

<h1>As most perfect things are, the wave pool is hidden. </h1>
Amongst cow farms, fields of crops, an Indian Casino and a proper 2-hour drive from any ocean lies the property known as “The Surf Ranch” in Lemoore, CA. Why the name? Because it’s all part of Salter’s master plan to blend the idea of surfing nowhere near a beach. In addition to offering the most perfect and consistent wave ever, he wants to bring surfing to places and people who have never been able to experience it. A genius, charitable and overall legendary feat for someone who has already accomplished so much for himself and his sport.

After entering the property through branded wooden gates that gave it the vibe of some secret chocolate factory, we were greeted by the Ranch Staff. The team was comprised of veteran lifeguards and watermen from around the world who have been trusted as water safety coordinators for the top big wave surfers. They walked us around the facility which was simply and elegantly designed to offer everything someone staying at a five star retreat would expect. We were escorted into a locker room that was more of a Surfer’s dream man cave. It was decorated with photos of the ranch’s inception, surfing royalty and celebs who had visited before. A flat screen had constant loops of surf films and a ping pong table awaited an in between session tournament. But most importantly, it was stocked with every type of surfboard imaginable. Once situated, I took the locker next to Slaters, it was time to finally experience what only a handful of surfers on earth have ever witnessed.

<h2>“The pool itself is something an 8-year old with a Black Amex would create.”</h2>
 2,000 feet long, 80 feet wide, 9 feet at its deepest, with a bottom that is designed and crafted to mimic the reef of Tahiti’s most famous wave, Teahupo’o. It was completely still and had a weird haze over it that was reflecting the steel pillars and trees that surround the property. Just as the sun began to emerge, the wave machine fired up. A loud engine noise echoed, and out of nowhere, a perfect, 6-foot wave grew from nothing. We watched with open mouths and even wider eyes as the wave peeled perfectly down the entire length of the pool until it dissolved into the water and once again the pool was just another pool. Chad and I looked at each other in total amazement. 5 minutes and a bunch of curse words later, the beast fired up again and we shook our heads as the machine returned to its original home at the opposite end of the pool, creating an equally perfect left hand wave. 
As the day progressed, the waves continued to do their thing. Everyone from beginners to industry legends paddled out and dropped in. It was surfed so many different ways and I sat on the sideline taking photos as some of the best board sport athletes in the world did their thing. I got my camera ready as it was Chad’s turn to go. He calmly dropped into the wave and surfed it flawlessly, even making it out of the perfect barrel that the world had been talking about for so long. At this point I was foaming at the mouth to get in the water. Towards the end of the day and thousands of photos later, I finally got my chance. 
Myself and a couple others were loaded up onto a jet ski and dropped off along the edge of the pool at different markers. We were positioned so that If someone fell, another surfer would be able to catch the remaining portion of the wave. The standard feeling of being in my wetsuit and on my board was replaced with a whole new vibe. Anticipation grew and after a few minutes of waiting the wave arrived. I sat in excitement and fright. It moved towards me at a precise 18mph. I turned, paddled hard and dropped in. I raced across the face, laser focused on not falling, which of course caused me to under rotate a turn and go down at the halfway point. The perfection the wave offers is to be handled differently, less of an aggressive approach and more in a savoring, more enjoyable manor. Annoyed and frustrated that I just blew my wave, I sat back and realized where I was, what I got to do and who I got to do it with.

<h1>It was here at the Surf Ranch that an outsider could actually see how many backgrounds revolve around surfing.</h1>
Executives from Hurley, Beats, Verizon and quicksilver mingled with pro snowboarder Travis Rice and world renowned photographer Craig Stecyk as waves and laughs were had. It really was a melting pot of personalities who shared one common interest. This seemed to be the basis that Kelly built the Ranch off of. Surfing is such a powerful sport and lifestyle that brings so many differnet people together that it should not be reserved for those who have access to the ocean. By bringing the waves to landlocked locations, it will allow new people to fall in love with surfing.

<h1>Porsche Taycan:</h1>
When evaluating the biggest auto makers, the well rounded group at VW takes the cake in almost every category. With the ability to come out with something ground breaking in the electric performance market, they turned to they’re shining superstar Porsche to deliver the goods.

<h1>Rivian ￼R1T/R1S:</h1>
When dissecting the luxury truck and suv market, names like Land Rover, BMW, Ford and Mercedes Benz are some of the top players at the table. They have decades of experience and data driving their progression of the engine into something pure electric. 
But there’s a new kid on the block. Rivian is a full blown adventure machine from the future while still giving a nod to the land cruisers and defenders of years past. With a luxurious vegan interior, more storage than you thought you needed and all the cool features to keep it competitive with Elon’s crazy ideas (Rivian’s tank mode allows it to spin in place a full 360) it is a serious glimpse at what our truck and SUV market might be. 
The R1t is Rivian’s pickup while the R1S is their traditional SUV that gives Range Rover a serious run for their money. Look for both models to be quietly ripping through trails this coming fall.

<h1>Tesla Cybertruck:</h1>
Tesla has officially become the most valuable American auto company in history. Although their journey has been rocky with a ton of risk and liabilities still looming, Elon Musk has proven that they’re legit and so are their cars. With more model 3’s being sold in major metropolitan cities than Prius’s, Tesla has captivated consumers with their minimalistic approach to design and filling their cars to the brim with futuristic features and functions. But, nothing they have released has ever been as crazy and out there as their new pick up dubbed “CyberTruck”.
The machine is straight out of Blade Runner, has horribly sharp and aggressive edges and a so called “bullet proof” exterior. With a starting price of $30k it was built to compete and Tesla knows exactly why they’re doing. 
While consumers are still awaiting two other models (model Y and the Roadster) Elon claims cybertruck will be available by 2021.

<h1>Not Quite There.</h1>
Although all of these cars are exciting and hopeful for a more sustainable and fun future, our economy isn’t quite ready to fully make the switch.
With tons of electric cars being sold every day, the demand for charging stations and quick charging solutions are still not as abundant or accessible as gas stations. I personally believe that even with government influence, continuous innovation and consumer adaptation, we still need to have a economic offering of easy charging to be able to handle the demand of switching over to electric completely. 
I can’t wait for the day where I can ditch the pump for good.

<h1> What makes greatness?</h1>
In a world where the newest, the coolest and the “best” are the driving forces of consumerism, it’s often overlooked at how the brands’ responsible carved their success and their industries. 
When strolling through a modern mall, the average person is hit with hundreds of logos at any given time. Some are designed to draw people in. Others are there to make a statement. But among the clutter there are a few that have stood the test of time and represent more than a company. They offer the experience of acquiring a lifelong goal, a dream tool or just the pride of purchase. 
Rolex, Porsche and Leica are the pinnacle of quality in their respected industries. But their product offerings are pinnacle of legacy. Here’s how they let their goods bring them to the top and their brand integrity keep them there.

<h1> The almighty crown.</h1>
The wristwatch is a tool and a statement. It’s one of the only things that’s used by it’s owner every single day, then passed down to the next generation to do the same. 
Switzerland is home to the mecca of watch manufacturing. The precision and perfection that is ingrained into the mentality of the Swiss allows for the most powerful and precise time pieces on earth. In 1915 Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis started a watch company in Geneva called Rolex. The idea was simple, produce a watch that offered the highest tier of class while providing the ultimate level of robustness. 
After years of doing just that they ran into the same issue their competitors were facing, dust and moisture under the glass. So they decided to up the level and in 1926 Rolex released the world’s first waterproof and dustproof watch, The Oyster.

Now, over 100 years old, Rolex is the most desired luxury watch brand and one of the most desired items on earth. They have a roster of athletes and tastemakers as their ambassadors who individually represent the limits and purposes of their models. 
Take the famous Submariner dive watch for example. The “Sub” as it’s called in the watch enthusiast world, is one of the most popular watch designs in history. It’s simple face, sporty bezel and famous cyclops magnifying date window have been mimicked time and time again. But what an actual submariner is capable of is handling the submersible pressure that one can experience being 1,000 ft below the surface. The combination of its timeless design has made it a forever top desired item of individuals everywhere and it’s ability to operate in the harshest of conditions has made it a necessity for some of the world’s top explorers.
The attention to detail in providing the world with actual tools that look amazing has made the name Rolex powerful. It’s short name combined with it’s Crown logo, derived from it’s British soul, are recognizable anywhere and everywhere.

<h1> THE Sports Car</h1>
When evaluating the most fun things you can buy, the list will always end up at a car. A fast car for that matter. In 2019 the world saw the introduction of technology and performance the car world has never seen. Electric engines, autonomous driving and ridiculous speeds topped the popularity charts. Wealthy collectors of said cars gained notoriety on social media and car culture grew larger and grander than ever before. But in the end, atop a mountain of luxury price tags, crazy horsepower and futuristic designs sits pure, classic perfection. 
In 1931 Ferdinand Porsche started a design consulting company out of a small studio in Stuttgart, Germany. His intentions were to offer innovative designs and powerful advertising for just about anything automotive. After a few years of successful campaigns for small car manufacturers and tractor companies, he received a bid to design a car for the German government from scratch. The idea was to create a car for the German people, a car of the people for that matter, “The Volkswagen”. That’s how the Beetle was born.

Years later in 1939, Ferdinand finally introduced the Porsche 64, his first foray into the brand enthusiasts and driver hold so near and dear to their heart today. 
After all this time and success, Porsche continues to push the limits of auto technology and design while still encompassing the DNA of its original models. This drive to never stray from its origins has been powerfully played out in its advertising over the years as well. When looking at modern day auto brands there are too many signs of modern and futuristic lines and components. Porsche somehow and some way always stays on par while never pushing the curvature and vibe of their models past the boundaries of the brands morals.
This is where the aura of Porsche lives and breathes.

<h1>The Ultimate Moment Maker.</h1>
Evaluating your “daily carry” is something that has become a fun and interesting topic on the modern day blog. It’s essentially a compilation of items that one needs to go about their day and get “everything” done that they would need to do. Thanks to Steve Jobs a list of 20 is no compiled into the single item of the iPhone. Your calendar, phone, note pad, compass, address book, phone book, computer and phone have all turned into flattened tangible apps and one pocket can take the place of the once necessary backpack. But the item that is most powerful to fit on that list, the one that gets used so often and brings joy for many generations after, is the camera.
Cameras in today’s market are feats of technological engineering. Small and sophisticated bodies capture stunning, pixel packed images and life like video. Sharp and fast lenses compliment these bodies to provide image quality that was once reserved for studios and professionals only. But among these tech giants lives a brand that provides image quality, robust products and a legacy that cannot and will not be rivaled or duplicated.

Leica cameras are just equally as beautiful as they are capable. Their machined magnesium alloy bodies and signature leather grip allow the photographer at the helm to feel like they’re using a proper piece of machinery instead of “just a camera”.

<h1 style="text-align: center;">The Island of Fun</h1>With social media quickly becoming the go to source for all that is travel, certain locations around the world have become extra popular since the big boom of instagram and facebook. What was once only reserved for locals, the mega rich or off the grid adventurers, Exotic vacation destinations have become the prime choice for those looking to experience something completely new all while flexing a little bit for their followers.&nbsp;The Caribbean has become the Tropical island vacation to rule them all. With over 700 major Islands and 28 island nations, the abundance of cultural and experience options is truly endless.&nbsp; I have personally had the honor of being able to visit many of the tropical landfalls that make up this dreamy chain of islands and by far, St. Barth’s is the most fun.

While on the St. Barth’s we stayed on the north side of the island at an incredible hotel called <a href="https://letoiny.com">Le Toiny</a>. Nestled into a hillside and over looking a secluded bay, the resort has a very bohemian vibe and allows guests to have a luxurious, yet removed feeling.&nbsp;

This is the view from your villa. What’s incredible about this resort is it has an unbelievable surf break right in front. Something that you usually don’t see in the Caribbean. <h1 style="text-align: center;">DO SURFERS HAVE THE ABILITY TO SENSE SHARKS IN THE LINEUP?</h1> <h2>SHARK RESEARCHER DR. CHRIS LOWE BREAKS DOWN OUR SENSE FOR "SHARKY VIBES" WHEN SURFING.</h2>JUNE 3, 2019 BY ZANDER MORTONAs surfers, we've all said it: Looks sharky, feels sharky, seems sharky…but is there scientific reasoning behind our "shark sense", or is it simply our imaginations running wild? We called up Dr. Chris Lowe, an avid shark scientist and surfer, to find out if our fight-or-flight safety sense extends into the ocean and under the surface, even when when we don't actually see anything. OK, so do humans have an innate ability to sense that sharks are around, even if we don't see them? Do we have some evolutionary safety signal hard-wired in our brains from thousands of years ago? I don't know if there is any scientific evidence to support that "shark sense", but there's certainly some evolutionary significance. Historically, we used to be very in tune with our environment. We realized we weren't at the top of the food chain when we were out hunting and foraging, and we knew there were things out there that could kill us, so we had to pay attention to the things happening around us. And of course, we're not aquatic creatures, so when we entered the ocean it was–and still is–an even further uneven playing field. What's happened over time is, we've lost our ability to really pay attention to what's happening around us, and as a result, it puts us at a greater disadvantage when we're in the wild, and I consider the the ocean to be a wild place. Historically, we knew what it meant when wildlife was acting strange around us, but now often times we don't pay attention, and therefore we're missing key signals that could have been a tip. I think we all have a predator radar hard-wired in our brains that we don't always pay enough attention to, though some people are better in tune with it than others.

The hard part, scientifically, is separating out, "OK, am I using my shark radar right now, or is it just my imagination?" That's the tough part. I've been out in the water diving, snorkeling, surfing, and you just get that creepy feeling: The hairs on the back of your neck start to stand up, you feel really uncomfortable…and I've always paid attention to those signs as something real and I get out of the water. That's true. I'm sure all surfers can relate to getting chills down the spine while surfing, enough to send them in even without an actual shark sighting. Yep. And the thing is, maybe you cut a session early and you get out of the water because something just didn't feel right–no harm no foul. That's OK. But the thing we have to remind ourselves is, what happens in Hollywood shark movies shouldn't cloud our imaginations, with how unfounded they are. But if there are bait balls hanging around, birds crashing around, a seal crawling on your board…those are not bonding moments, that's wildlife telling you something is going on underneath or around you. So we just have to get people re-educated to pay attention to those real life signs again. Because I certainly believe our "shark radar" is tuned to pick up on those things.

Not the kind of thing you want to see or think of .... ever.

To that point, should we be any more or less concerned about sharks in the area based on specific activity? For instance, is it sharkier because of seals on the beach or in the water, or less sharky because dolphins are present? [Laughs] The dolphin thing is pretty false. People who spend a lot of time in the water do one of two things: They either pay a lot of attention to the wildlife around them and use wildlife as telling signs, and then there are the people who spend so much time in the water that they just ignore wildlife completely. The challenge here is, we really don't know why sharks occasionally bite people. Incidents happen so infrequently, that it's really hard to nail down what the specific condition was that led to the bite. Most of the time they are unprovoked incidents where the person is minding their own business and the shark comes over and bites them. In most cases there's no pattern, so what should we be telling people to look for? That's the hard part. However, there are times when a seal is acting weird, trying to get on someone's board or boat, and that's an animal that is telling you something. Or if you're out on your board, and a big ball of bait comes over to you, those fish are going to you because your board provides cover. And then you have sharks that are going through that bait ball, mouth open, trying to grab something. And if your leg or hand is hanging in the water, it can easily be mistaken. So that's another time to pay attention to nature.As far as dolphins go, we've seen that when dolphins and juvenile white sharks are in the same area, sometimes the dolphins will harass the sharks, and other times they'll just ignore them completely. So, that whole dolphin thing is not really true. However, if you see dolphins circling around their young, that can often mean a shark is in the area, as they do that out of protection. Lastly, we always warn people not to be in areas where they see a dead marine animal. You just don't want to be in those areas, because you increase the chances a shark will view you as competition for a free buffet, or that you'll just get mistaken for a meal.Is there any electrical signals, or maybe a scent, that certain humans might give off that would attract a shark to them? For instance: When you hear about an attack in a crowded lineup, was it the un-luck of the draw, or did a shark choose one surfer over another based on something else? See, those are things we just can't answer. Most of the time there is no evidence that somebody was doing something that was different from everybody else, or exuding some odor, so there's just no pattern we can find from a scientific standpoint, so it just leads us to think these could just be random mistakes. I'll tell you though, it's much more rare for someone to be bitten in a group. Surfers hate to hear this, but while it's great to be surfing by yourself at that great break in the evening when it's lonely and peaceful, that's the worst place to be, for two reasons. One is you're a lone target, which is what naive young sharks go after, and the other is there's not going to be anyone around to help you. Nine times out of ten, when surfers are seriously bitten, if not for first responders in the water that surfer likely wouldn't make it back to the beach.

The most famous example is Mick Fanning's unprovoked incident at J-Bay. While there are typically hundreds of surfers out there on any given day, that shark was potentially more curious, and maybe even more aggressive, because Fanning was sitting there all alone. Exactly. And while we don't know all the science behind shark behavior–in fact we're not even close–from what we've learned, these are things we see statistically across the globe: it’s safer to surf in a group, avoid murky water, and all of the things we just discussed. But there are also some big myths. The dolphin thing being one of them, but another is that it's dangerous for a woman to be in the water while menstruating. That's just pure bullshit. There's no evidence of that. How much blood does it actually take to attract a shark to any given area? I can tell you, as a shark scientist, I will go out and spend hours trying to chum sharks using choice chum, and we'll still sit there for hours. Sometimes sharks will come around and we'll see them in the distance, but they won't come to the source. So once you get past the Hollywood stuff and the shark week drama, you begin to realize these animals are very cautious. They don't just crash the party looking for free food. So if you're seriously bleeding, while it's prudent to get out, it's not as if you're going to get ravaged by sharks.Do you foresee a day when we've created a shark repellent that works so well we'll be able to surf somewhere like Reunion Island without fearing for our lives? Maybe we'll come up with something. But the science isn't there yet. Let's just say some of the stuff on the market is 60-percent effective. But it's not been tested on all species, under all conditions, in all situations. I always ask people: How comfortable would you be using a birth control that only works 60 percent of the time? Because that's what we're talking about. That's the dice you're rolling. The other issue I have with shark repellents is we see people use them like a superman's cloak. And it changes their behavior. But the thing is, the best shark repellent on the market today is just good common sense, and you know what? It's free. That goes back to what this piece is all about: Your shark sense. It sounds like it's real, and we should trust it more than some device that we strap to our boards or ankle. At least for now. Exactly. We've tested electrical, chemical and magnetic repellents in my lab for 30 years, and I've given up. My philosophy is this: Use good common sense, develop a better shark radar, pay attention to wildlife, and continue to use the ocean, because the probability of being bitten by a shark is like winning the powerball.

<h1>I have special friends.</h1>
 I am a very thankful person. I like to think it’s because of my upbringing, my abilities and my overall life in general. But as long as I can remember a singular quote has always stuck out to me, “you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with”. My friends are as awesome as they come. They love to have fun and create memories which reflects on their occupations differing to anything and everything across the board. Because of this I have the luxury of any normal day becoming a special day.&nbsp;Cue my buddy Albee (see boomerang above). The only way to describe him is unique. He’s the kind of guy that instantly makes you want to do cool shit and smile while doing so. Why? Well he’s a helicopter pilot. His daily grind consists of flying around and above Los Angeles, taking out private tours, giving lessons and even just “cruising” around having a good time. When sifting through <a href="https://instagram.com/thebere?igshid=qsrvlvsusmsa">his Instagram</a>&nbsp;you are bombarded with stunning imagery and videos of 3D helicopter rides, people skydiving out of his chopper and the occasional snowboard mission. But all in all he’s just a good dude. This particular day was pretty average for me, until my buddy Nick called. “Yo, Albee is going to land his chopper behind my house. Grab a camera and come over.” Remember when I said the whole “any normal day to special day” thing?

The cool thing about Malibu is that there’s so much undeveloped, natural land so close to one of the largest cities on earth. Acres and acres of land may seem like negative space to most but to Albee, it’s unlimited options for landing and taking off. Nick and I were told to be waiting in a field just above his neighborhood. In order to get there we had to drive up a trail that winds around a hillside over looking the ocean. Once up there we parked in a field and waited. Texts saying “10 minutes out” and “almost there” became abundant yet we just sat there looking up at the sky and listening. It felt as if Nick and I were making a hand off in a bond movie. Then out of nowhere, Albee shows up.&nbsp;

[The bird] gracefully banked around the field until finally resting down effortlessly. Nick and I grabbed our cameras per Albee’s request and ran to the chopper with our heads down and crouched over like we had run the same drill 100 times before. To my surprise the chopper has no doors, simple harnesses and just enough room for 4 people with no extra bags. Small by aviation standards. Within seconds of putting our intercom headset on we were off.

Albee piloted the aircraft with flawless control. The wind was a bit aggressive and with no doors we were very aware of its presence, but his navigation allowed the chopper to use the gusts to its advantage.After 15 minutes of exploring Malibu Canyon from above, we found a hilltop to land on. I watched in total focus as the single joystick in the cockpit simply landed the helicopter in a 20ft x 20ft compact space. We truly had free range of the entire area.

Due to the nature of our adventure, I of course posted on my Instagram story about what we were doing. Within minutes a message came in from our friend Reid saying that he was on a motorcycle ride through the canyon and that he wanted to come meet up. I sent him our location and in no time he was there.

After we had our fun it was time to head back. As Albee simply put it “small chopper, small fuel range” .

All good though. It was getting late and the lack of doors doesn’t seem as “enjoyable” when the sun goes down.

And just like that we were back in our car, in the middle of the empty field, the spontaneous part of my day was over and the “normal” part of of my day resumed.&nbsp;What’s interesting is you don’t need a helicopter to have a special moment. Just make sure to give yourself breaks to enjoy out of the ordinary experiences every once and a while and try to surround yourself with good people.
