Jamal has conceived and orchestrated every season of Vancouver Fashion Week and has now expanded into Kid’s Fashion Week held during the Friday and Saturday daytime giving some of Vancouver’s young up and coming models a chance to walk the runway and support Vancouver.

His passion for fashion and providing a showcase for talent in all aspects of the fashion experience, including sustainability and inclusive of abilities from designers, models, make up artists, hair stylists, photographers, stagehands, teachers, students, bloggers, media, department stores, boutiques and pop ups, and buyers.

<h1>Brief History of VFW</h1>
Since its conception in 2001, Vancouver Fashion Week has been dedicated to cultivating the success of both established designers and award-winning emerging designers with its global perspective and highly multicultural approach. Championing diversity in designers, styles, age, experience, special needs and recognizing up and coming bright future stars as well as honouring industry veterans in every aspect of the fashion industry, is at its core, 
Vancouver Fashion Week has grown to be the second-largest fashion week in North America – and continues to grow today as the fastest growing fashion week in the world.
Founded by entrepreneur Jamal Abdourahman, Vancouver Fashion Week was initially branded ‘International Fashion Week’ for its first season. Fiercely passionate about the fashion industry and his home city, Jamal made it his ongoing mission to travel to fashion capitals to connect with industry leaders and to keep Vancouver on the top of the fashion radar. Since its first season, Vancouver Fashion Week has been built from the ground up by the fashion industry and has become a celebrated occasion in the Canadian fashion community.
As part of its commitment to up and coming talent, Vancouver Fashion Week presented its first annual Nancy Mak Award in 2014. The Nancy Mak Award is given to a talented and promising emerging BC-based designer with the intention of providing tools needed to bring their brand to the next step.
In 2016, Vancouver Fashion Week expanded into children’s fashion with the incorporation of Vancouver Kids Fashion Week, which has become a media hub for Canadian children’s boutiques and international children’s fashion designers alike. Since then, Vancouver Fashion Week has launched two magazines both in print and digital: Vancouver Kids Fashion Week Magazine (bi-annual), and Micro Macro Magazine.
In 2017, Vancouver Fashion Week launched Global Fashion Collective (GFC) to further propel the global exposure of its most promising designers. Producing shows at New York Fashion Week, Tokyo Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week through Global Fashion Collective, The team at Vancouver Fashion Week continues to provide its designers not only with a platform for their craft but also with ongoing opportunities for commerce and growth.
The City of Vancouver proclaims Vancouver Fashion Week every year. 
Many Local designers have gotten their first public runway experience under the hashtag of #vanfashionweek and many more to come, starting at #vfwfw22. So come as you are, dress to impress and welcome back to Vancouver Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2022.

It is with the greatest of pleasure that I am able to share this Vancouver Fashion Week Fall Winter 2022 “MAG” with you. What makes it so special, is the fact that we are actually going to be gathering together in person with global designers. I am thrilled to be seeing the people who make Vancouver Fashion Week so special, year after year, including the designers, models, makeup artists, photographers, international and local bloggers, instructors, buyers and the fashion-forward people who thrive on being able to get out and show the world just what they’ve got. It is not easy to produce the 2nd largest fashion week in North America. something of this magnitude on a semi-annual basis that has the potential to have a huge impact on the showcased designers.
None of this of course would be possible without the vision of Jamal Abdourahman. His dedication to support new designers here in Vancouver including Kid’s Fashion Week and his Global Fashion Collective in some of fashion’s most revered events offers us an opportunity to expand our fashion horizon.
This MAG would not be possible without the dedication and contribution of Marilyn R. Wilson, who cajoles pre-VFW interviews from people all over the world to entice an and excite us, but she also ensures that every designer family and foreign journalists is taken under her wing, introduced to the right people and made to feel welcome and special. I look forward to more of Andrew Jackson’s contributions in his J Andrew Speaks column called Dress the Part.. I know that many of my other blogging colleagues and social media posting friends will have so much to contribute as always. I admire and appreciate the professional photographers and the work that they do as well.
Most of all I appreciate the people who come out to take part in the Vancouver Fashion Week experience. I always look forward to seeing old and new friends, be inspired by new trends, and once again feel the thrill of a live event. One good thing that has come out of the pandemic, is the ability to be able to share in this experience even if you can’t be there physically. PASSION and PURPOSE motivate me to seek opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives. Experiential, transformational, experiential travel was my main focus, until the pandemic destroyed our ability to travel for the better part of 2 years. I have always been involved in writing and health and wellness for myself and others.

<h1>Marilyn R. Wilson</h1>
The Grand Dame of VFW
Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer, published author, speaker and editor with a passion for interviewing. Her current career began at the age of 50 when she threw caution to the wind and answered a Craigslist ad from a New York fashion magazine, even though she had no experience. When they surprisingly accepted two of her story ideas, the doors opened on a whole new career - proof positive it is never to late to embrace a new passion.
Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a “one-on-one” with an internationally recognized artist, her goal is the same – to share the unique journeys of inspiring individuals. In 2007, this led her to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the local fashion industry, paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Her articles have been featured in publications such as Raine Magazine (NYC) and Schon Magazine (London). 
Wilson took her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book titled Life Outside The Box featuring mini-bios of ten of her favourite interviews. This was followed by The Wisdom of Listening where she shares her decade long journey of interviewing through the many life-changing pieces of gold (wisdom) she received in those interviews. The most important? We are all exactly who we are meant to be. It's time for each of us to embrace and walk our own unique path – without apology!
Marilyn is also fondly known as the godmother, grand dame, Mother Theresa and anchor Vancouver fashion week blogger, doing personal interviews with every designer who will take the time to respond to her interview requests, always front row and centre, graciously taking writers, photographers, designers, models and their families under her well-heeled wings to ensure everyone is properly welcomed, introduced, photographed and connected. Backstage, and with all the volunteers needed to put on a show of this magnitude, she is equally revered and welcomed backstage by the makeup artists, dressers, and her thoughtful crew snacks to express her appreciation for the hours of dedication it takes to put on such a complex event.

J. Andrew Jackson is a lover of fashion, a fashion blogger and journalist. He has over 40 years of experience in the fields of costume and fashion design, having learned to see at an early age from his mom, a seamstress. . He now writes the blog the Dress The Part/ J. Andrew Speaks , and freelances. 
From a very young age he loved to design create and explore the world of fashion and costume, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts, in Costume Design and Art History. After working as a theatrical costume designer , teacher and artist, his latest outlet of creativity is his blog, Dress the Part, spanning contemporary, vintage, luxury, street wear and ultra glam, as long as the craftsmanship and style fits the function.

<h1>How It All Began</h1>
The Root of Lacking Self Confidence

I’ve always been self conscious of my appearance. From the time when puberty hit until almost a year ago, I’ve come across extreme redness, occasional swelling, and plentiful breakouts.

It hurt to put makeup on, even the natural products. And often, my acne would turn purple as I would continue to pick at my face. It was not pretty…

<h1>And Then There Was Hope</h1>
It was in 2020-2021 when I experienced my worst skin irritation. It was around the time of my wedding, so not much sleep and much stress - perfect for the skin! 
My parents were concerned when they realized that the skin irritation was still an issue months after the wedding. Their solution: see a dermatologist. 
They didn’t need to convince me. After trying multiple products and over-the-counter drugs to reduce the problem, I knew I needed something. But little did I know that my solution was far from seeing a dermatologist.

It was in July of 2021 when I was approached with a business opportunity. I didn’t know what to expect. I just liked the sound of getting natural skincare products at a great discount (the only thing I was using for my skin at this time was a bar of soap). 
A few days later, my packaged arrive. It was that night when I tried my new skincare routine for the first time. It was a complete disappointment - or at least I thought it was!

<h1>6 Months Later…</h1>
A transformation I never expected

The first time I used Monat’s skincare, my face was burning red and full of heat. It was because of this new business opportunity that I continued to pursue my new skincare routine - and I’m more than thankful that I did! 
It was only the one time when I experienced burning and redness. Now, I use these skincare products twice daily and my face has never felt and looked better!

<h1>About Me</h1>

My name is Avery and I have spent the last four years learning everything I could about the products we use every day and what ingredients are in them. 
When I was 13, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. Though my family was one of the lucky ones, and had a speedy recovery, it still puzzles me how someone so young and healthy had to endure this diagnosis. I vividly remember my mom’s oncologist advising her to stay away from dairy and soy going forward. This sticks out as the first instance I had heard of factors in our environment being a potential threat to our health. 
My academic career focused on the factors that are contributing to adverse health outcomes, specific to maternal, fetal, and infant health. It became quickly apparent through these studies that there is something happening in our every day lives that is contributing to an increased risk of disease. I took a deep dive into the regulations within the United States and couldn’t believe how little the agencies that are designed to protect us are doing to check ingredients before they’re in products we touch every day. 
I’ve tested hundreds of products and have done the research so you don’t have to. Luckily, there’s so many amazing products on the market now that don’t make us sacrifice quality for safety. 
I’m so happy and excited to share everything I have learned and products I love so much with everyone!

I love to keep my makeup light for almost all occasions. I find my makeup looks best when you can still see some of my freckles and my natural skin texture. 
Especially if I’m on vacation in a warm place, like I was this holiday season in Miami, the more I am in the sun the less makeup I need!

<h1>3 essential products </h1>

There are 3 products I want to highlight that I think are essential for a light glam!!

When it comes to going out you want to make sure your makeup lasts! This oil free Laura Mercier foundation is the best. And you can keep it light or use it for extra coverage in certain areas. I wear it in shade vanillé.

Again, keeping things light and simple. Using this Rare Beauty on my cheek and lip is fun and efficient. You only need a little of it to go a long way too! I wear it in shade Happy.

Lip liner. Lips are so important to keeping a look together and fresh looking. I always bring my lip liner with me when I go out to make sure the shape looks good as new throughout the night. I wear this Gucci lip liner in nude!

<h1>I Got an IUD | Here’s How My Body Changed</h1>

Alright, ladies. Let’s talk birth control. Whether you are sexually active, have problems with your period, looking to clear up your skin, or any other reason, odds are you have decided to start birth control. While looking for birth control, you know you are faced with many options when it comes to deciding what form of birth control is right for you.
For years I was on the pill and it worked wonders for me (I received mine to help with my many period problems). While the pill did not stop my period altogether, it did help clear up my skin, help my mood, and made my period as tolerable as a period can be. That is until my body decided that it needed a change.
I noticed that my body was starting to have heavier periods and my mood swings were getting worse as I was entering into my twenties — I know, prime time to have all this sh*t start back up again. So I talked to my OBGYN about what my options were and we landed on the Kyleena IUD. My doctor felt that Kyleena was a better fit for my body type over Mirena, but talk to your doctor and see which option is best for you.

If you are thinking of starting or changing your birth control, talk to your OBGYN about the different birth control options and find which ones right for you.I chose to try the IUD for three reasons:
1. To make my periods become tolerable and maybe have them disappear altogether.
2. To not have to worry about taking a pill simultaneously every day — my period was so bad that if I didn’t take it at the exact time I needed to, then BAM, my period would start.
3. Because my doctor felt I needed to try a different type of hormone as I was becoming older.
Now, with any birth control you take, there is always a risk of side effects and I had heard that the side effects with an IUD can be pretty bad for the first six months or so. Well, I’m coming up on six months with this sucker, which is how my body was affected.

The Procedure: Make sure to bring someone with you to drive you home after because let me tell you — getting one of these suckers in is not an easy feat. Now it is completely tolerable ladies, but you will have some cramps for the following hours and you may get lightheaded while it’s being put in. I had to stay and drink Sprite to make sure that I wouldn’t pass out.
First Three Months:&nbsp;My doctor felt it would be best for my body to transition to the IUD rather than switching right off the bat, so she had me stay on my birth control pills for the first three months. During those months, I really didn’t notice any difference in my body or mood other than my period went from being unbearable to pretty much non-existent in a matter of two months! WHOOHOO!
Okay here’s the good part:&nbsp;After I finished my birth control pills and was only on the IUD, I noticed my body started to change (essentially it feels like my body is going through a second puberty).
I noticed that I started seeing acne, not much, but enough to notice a difference when it was close to my time of the month and in random places on my body (my shoulders, chest, top of legs).
My body has gone from being stick-thin with very little curves, to a curvier woman in about the span of two months. Now, don’t get me wrong — having a bigger butt and a little bit of bigger boobs is nice — but in the span of two months, I gained about twenty pounds while also eating better and working out more. I know doesn’t really make much sense.

Here’s what didn’t change:&nbsp;My mood overall has remained the same and guess what ladies — NO PERIOD! Now, I can tell when I’m having my period because I still feel the cramps and still need to wear panty liners for discharge and things (sorry, I know it’s gross but I’m just being honest).
As any OBGYN will tell you, they can not definitively say that weight gain is a symptom of birth control, but I wanted to share what my reaction is for those out there who are also scouring the internet looking to see if anyone has had similar issues that you are experiencing. I’ve talked to quite a few ladies about birth control symptoms, and all are different — some lost weight on ones that others gained. Maybe if we are more open to talking about our birth control problems, we can help find a solution. <h1>Step 1: Wash face</h1>
It’s important to wash your face in the morning to rinse off any oils that may have built up over night. In the morning I like to use a gentle wash. My favorite ones are the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and The Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. I find that these are perfectly gentle and not drying to use in the morning!

<h1>Step 2: Toner </h1>
After cleansing your skin, I like to use a toner to make sure you really get any excess oils off. There are two toners that I love, the NaturaBissē Tolerance Toner which is a more gentle toner and the SkinCeuticals LHA Toner which has an exfoliant affect to it.

<h1>Step 4: Serums + Ice Roller</h1>
Dark circles under the eyes are part of the look of a college student. I have tried so many serums and creams to get rid of them. The serum that I find to be the most effective (and not too pricey) is The Ordinary Caffeine Solution. I think this needs to be in the welcome package that colleges send to their students once admitted because it is a life saver!

The other serum that I swear by to brighten my skin is the Skin Ceuticals C E Ferulic. Other Vitamin C serums that I love and are bit more budget friendly are by Clinique, Glow Recipe, Olehenriksen, and Summer Fridays. 
Another step I have recently incorporated into my skin care routine is ice rolling (totally influenced by Tinx). As someone who loves sushi and chips and all things salty, I typically wake up with a puffy face in the morning. After applying my serums, I use my ice roller to de-puff my skin. The ice roller also increases blood flow and brightens my complexion!

<h1>Step 5: moisturize + SPF</h1>

I have been using this moisturizer from Epionce for so many years. It is the perfect weight and keeps my skin dewy and moist without getting oily! It also smells great too!

Another product that has been in my skincare routine for many years is Elta MD’s tinted SPF. I hate wearing makeup during the day and this product is the perfect solution. It protects my skin from the sun and the tint evens out my skin so flawlessly!

<h1>Nova Stevens Represents Possibility and Hope</h1>
Nova’s We*R One Campaign: Peace and Security for all
Nova Stevens stands heads and shoulders above much of her Miss Universe competitors in more ways than one. At six feet tall, her height serves to give her even more perspective on her life and journey from her birth in Kenya after fleeing the brutal civil war in their home in South Sudan to arriving as a refugee at age 6 in Canada, leaving behind all her immediate family. By 15, she headed West, eventually making her way to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 
Nova is passionate, determined, resilient, and multi-talented model, actress, spokesperson, Ambassador, mentor, and social activist for human and animal rights. She has also been an athlete, server, collection queen and youth coordinator along the way to her goals for her personal, family and professional life. 
It is her deep faith, on many levels that has given her the conviction and drive to become the second Black Miss Universe Canada, to represent her adopted country of Canada May 7-16th in Florida, and to have fulfilled her longstanding dream to reunite with her family in Ethiopia. Beyond this, she also brought thousands of HIV and COVID tests to Ethiopia and South Sudan,where she met with heads of state to discuss longer term ways she can make a difference in the country her mother spent 8 years in a UN refugee camp before a dangerous 24 day trek by foot and small boats to reunite with her husband and children.
By the young age of 15, with the help of the Youth Transition program in Alberta, Nova had already forged a life for herself, living independently, finishing school and learning the importance of guidance for youth. At age 18 she earned the manager position for the program because of her maturity and her drive to give back. 
Being separated from her family and growing up without her immediate family in Canada, in fact, helping her family financially since high school, Nova is acutely aware of the critical need to foster the healthy development of children and youth regardless of their circumstances. That is why, while continuing to work towards reuniting her family, she is continuously looking for opportunities to serve young Canadians as she is so grateful for the opportunities that being Canadian has given her.

<h1>On Unconventional Beauty &amp; Being Black </h1>
<h2>“Not everyone is going to like you”</h2>

“In 1989, Juliette Powell was the first (and last) Black woman to win Miss Universe Canada until Nova Stevens in 2020. That was over 30 years ago and 2 in the 68 years of the pageant. “It’s bothersome to me that in the last 30 years there has not been another Black woman good enough for the crown. I will not accept that. Because I don’t believe that to be the case at all. Canada’s a land of immigrants and it’s our diversity that makes us so beautiful. But I find that often times in certain industries—a lot of industries—it’s always one face that’s being shown as the face of Canada and I’m tired of it. We have to show the world that Canada really is diverse and a land of equal opportunity.”
“I was modelling in Milan and I remember doing a casting where the casting director said ‘what are you doing here, we told your agent – no Black girls.’ In my mind, I was like ‘that is not okay, you can’t just say that to someone.’ I was a grown woman so that didn’t really affect me as much but imagine if I was a 16-year-old girl hearing someone say that to me, at a point when I’m still trying to figure out who I am. That can cause a lot of damage in someone.”
Even this last week, Nova’s social media has been hit with very racist remarks from international social media, including from Asian countries. She put out a press release pointing out how small minded this is, especially given the rise of anti-Asian sentiment this past year. She fears not for herself, but for young, less experienced men and women who take these mean spirited comments to heart. Tolerance for one is nothing until there is tolerance for all. Other Miss Universe have come out condemning the bullying and shaming practices of “fans”.
“I consider myself “a lover of life” simply because I can find joy in all things- especially traveling; one of my greatest passions because it allows you to explore the world while learning new cultures and meeting new people. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways one can truly learn different aspects of themselves.”
I think we should all work on conquering our fears as it inhibits us. I am open to whatever opportunity the universe grants me as I believe life is full of surprises and that’s the beauty of it. Be in the moment and cut out all the extra “noise”.

<h1>Finding Your Voice</h1>
<h2>When Silence is Not an Option</h2>
In 2020, during the pandemic, and after events in the United States, Nova Stevens spoke at the first Freedom rally and then she and Shamika Mitchell co-founded the ‘Freedom March Vancouver’ and ‘Black Freedom Society,’ The mission is to eradicate hate and racism experienced by black and indigenous people of colour in the world today. On Friday (June 19) in the city's first large "Juneteenth" demonstration and celebration, thousands marched from Jack Poole Plaza down Thurlow Street to Sunset Beach. On August 1st, during their emancipation day march, Nova and Shamika announced that they had the city of Vancouver declare August 1st as emancipation day with an official document signed by the Mayor of Vancouver Kennedy Stewart 155 years after the first declaration was signed in Texas. One year later, the Canadian government finally recognized it federally.

Once Nova Stevens spoke at the first Freedom rally, and co-founded the ‘Freedom March Vancouver’ and ‘Black Freedom Society,’ she knew there was no turning back, only setting her sight on the bigger picture of eradicating hate and racism. After the "Juneteenth" demonstration and celebration, with thousands marching across the city, Nova and Shamika knew that their next goal of the Canadian government finally recognizing August 1st federally, was in their future.
Nova could not remain silent as a refugee and a Black woman. “I think it definitely made me more resilient. I have to thank my past experiences because they really have shaped me and who I am. If not for the struggles I experienced growing up I don’t think I would be as strong as I am. I don’t think I would have the ability to overcome obstacles that arise out of nowhere. I’m a firm believer that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It’s a motivating factor to keep pushing and to keep pursuing my dreams. Because not only do I have to be there for myself but also my family who are in a war-torn country with very little respect for human life.”
Canada’s a land of immigrants and it’s our diversity that makes us so beautiful. But I find that often times in certain industries—a lot of industries—it’s always one face that’s being shown as the face of Canada and I’m tired of it. We have to show the world that Canada really is diverse and a land of equal opportunity.”

Less than one year after those actions in Vancouver, Nova was given an honorary welcome to South Sudan to bring lifesaving HIV and COVID tests and guaranteed laboratory results as a beginning towards her desire to be instrumental in diminishing the civil war that tore her own family apart for over 20 years. Her ambitions to be a change maker have a strong foundation already. It is just one of her strengths that will make her an ideal Miss Universe, with your support .

<h1>Think Like a Queen</h1>
<h2>Nova Stevens sets her sight on 2021 Miss Universe Crown </h2>
I live by Oprah Winfrey’s quote “Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.” Those words have inspired me from a very young age. I have not been fortunate to grow up with my immediate family. It was people like Oprah that I looked up to, for inspiration. I remember always watching her talk show and listening to her advice carefully as if she was my mother. I learned that it’s not where you’re from, rather where you’re going. Your past does not define you, it strengthens you.
“I am very proud of the woman I’ve become and my accomplishments in my past, especially fulfilling my dream to see my family united these past weeks, of what I was able to do in South Sudan as a woman of South Sudanese heritage. I will take that with me these next weeks as I become the first Miss Universe of South Sudanese descent to walk on the Miss Universe stage. I am excited for my future and the example and role model I can be and for what I can inspire others to aspire to. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you recognize the power of your own voice and use it accordingly.”
“I want to leave a legacy of love, philanthropy and impact. I think the first key to success is knowing what you want. Once you know what you want, then you can orchestrate a plan on how to achieve it. Miss Universe Canada and the path towards achieving my goal of Miss Universe are platforms to open more doors for young girls of color who will see themselves in me and know that they too are capable and worthy of representing Canada at Miss Universe. I will also use this platform to continue the fight of injustice and racial inequality experienced by black indigenous people of colour. Currently, I am in the process of creating a non-profit organization that helps unprivileged youth lead a positive lifestyle.”
“I was 15, when I moved out on my own as I realized how important it is to surround yourself with positive energy. Things aren’t always easy, but ultimately we are in control of the people we decide to surround ourselves with.”
To those who can’t equate her role as a social activist and be part of what many consider to be a sexist beauty pageant, she replies:
“I disagree. Beauty pageants can empower women. The skills that you use in the competition are skills to use for the rest of your life. You’re public speaking in front of thousands of people, which takes a lot of courage. Preparation—you have to be mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared. It’s not as easy as people think it is. The questions that we’re being asked on stage are not easy. There’s more to it than ‘world peace.’ You have to be able to eloquently answer questions while remaining diplomatic all within 30 seconds. I don’t think a lot of people can do that. These women are strong and confident. They’re resilient, they’re diverse and they’re leaders. To put yourself out like that is a mark of leadership. These are leaders that have worked hard and they’re representing their countries by using their voices. I want to win so badly because I want to use that platform to not only encourage others to use their voices but also to advocate for change.”

<h2>Empowerment, Education and Financial Literacy </h2>
What’s important to me is education and financial literacy. Part of what I want to do with my organization is to have scholarship funds for kids and to give business grants to Black entrepreneurs. It’s important to empower yourself and I think business really does that.”
To me, winning this title means: showing the world that there isn’t an “ideal” beauty, we are all beautiful regardless of colour, shade, shape, physical attributes or whatever construct society has created to be considered “more beautiful “. It is time to show the world the true beauty of Canada which lies within our diverse culture and love for one another. Most importantly, I want to encourage young girls of colour to see themselves as beautiful, regardless of what society considers as “beautiful” I want them to see my image and think that they too can compete for Miss Universe Canada and win despite being of African descent with dark skin and non-Eurocentric features. We are all beautiful when we are authentically ourselves.

What are you earliest memories from South Sudan from your family?
I’ve actually never been to South Sudan. My first time ever being there was just two weeks ago. I also had the pleasure of meeting the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir. The reason for my trip wasn’t only to see the land and the people, but to also bring solutions. I donated 10,000 Covid-19 and HIV rapid tests. I’ve partnered up with a lab; we will be opening testing centres for Covid-19, HIV, cancer and the 15 other diseases that are currently affecting the people of South Sudan.

What gave you the courage to leave your family at such a young age to go so far from home?
I’m not sure if courage is the right word considering I was 6 when I left. I had no idea I’d be gone for so long. If I can recall correctly, I thought it was a vacation. I think I hold the record for the longest vacation ever! 21 years to be exact, since I’ve seen my family. I finally broke that record April 17, 2021.

What do you remember of the trip to Canada?
I don’t remember much aside from being on the plane, arriving in St John, Newfoundland in the middle of winter and being very cold!

You have always had a commitment to continue to help your family. What did you do when you were young, to help them and how did it make you feel?
Family has always been very important to me. In fact, I think my strength and motivation comes from knowing that my family is suffering in Africa and that I am their only hope, so I have no choice but to succeed. Not only for myself but for them as well. I’ve been working since I was 10 years old. My first job was raking leaves and babysitting. I didn’t start supporting my family until high school where I worked various jobs as a teenager. This is also around the time we started communicating. The first 10 years we had lost contact. Thankfully with the help of social media and globalization we were able to find each other.

What was the role of sports in when you were growing up?
I grew up an athlete. Whether I liked it or not, I was always in sports. I loved playing sports (except track and field) I used to hate running. Now, as an adult, I’ve grown to love it. Some of the best lessons in life, I’ve learned from playing sports and being on teams. The most important ones are ‘never giving up’ and understanding ‘the power of teamwork’ and confidence.

Did you have mentors in school and what lessons do you feel have served you the most during all these intervening years and going into your Miss Universe pageants? From the first time until winning Miss Universe Canada on your third try, and now heading into Miss Universe in May? What do you remember most from each of your competitions?
My teachers and coaches in high school have become more like family to me. They taught me that love sees no colour and that family is not always blood bound. They also taught me the importance of having a good support system and choosing those in your circle carefully. Lastly, it’s ok to ask for help. It doesn’t mean you’re weak. I am Miss Universe Canada and excited to compete for Miss Universe because I have amazing people in my corner that believe in me and have helped me during this journey, especially as this all happened during the Pandemic with its own very unique, ever changing and restrictive considerations that meant we had to be very resourceful, and I cannot say enough about my team and sponsors who stood by me with all the twists and turns every day-sometimes, minute by minute. There were lots of disappointments, but my same philosophy and ethics helped get me where I am at this moment, ready to embrace the Miss Universe experience in Florida.

What brought you to leave Newfoundland and head out west alone? Where have you lived in Canada? 
I’ve lived in Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta and now, Vancouver, British Columbia.

What was your most interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.
I was 18 and was hired by a third party debt collection company. Ironically, I was the number 1 debt collector in North America during my tenure with the company. That would probably be my most unusual job. This to me was a clear indication of my people skills. I have always been great at communicating with people and genuinely enjoy it.

Do you feel that friends can become family when you have no family around?
Absolutely! Friends are they family you get to choose, which is one of the biggest testaments of love in my opinion.

What characteristics and values do you value the most in your friends and have adopted in yourself?
The characteristics I value the most are: honesty, kindness, loyalty and being supportive, to name a few.

What are your most inspirational sayings?
Oh lots! Some of my all-time favorites are:
“If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far for together” African proverb.

What are the actions or words of others that upset you the most and what do you do to get beyond those thoughts and feelings?
Hateful/ discriminatory/ derogatory, racist words/actions upset me. I believe we are one and should treat one another with love and kindness because words have tremendous power. How I combat hate of any kind is with love. I am a firm believer in “Kill them with kindness”. If someone chooses to be hateful and you choose to not entertain them, after a while they’ll most likely feel foolish for being so hateful, especially if you don’t give them the hate back. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. In fact there have been numerous cases recently of very racist, disparaging posts on my social media. They question my skin, my hair, my looks. If they continue, I just ignore and move on with my life. I am very cognizant however, that other young women could take it much more personally and to heart and might prevent them from following their own dreams because of someone else’s racism and prejudices. That is tragic.

Who are your current role models?
My mother is my number 1 role model, even if it was not going to be Mother’s Day this weekend. She has endured more than most people can handle and yet, including being separated from her husband and children all this time. She risked her life fleeing to Ethiopia by walking and travelling on small boats for 24 days. She still remains positive with a big smile on her face. She bears the physical scars of the inhumane and precarious situation of living for 8 years in a UN refugee camp. She is by far the epitome of a warrior. She taught me to always keeps fighting and never gives up. Other inspirational women would include the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Maya Angelou as well as Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.

Beyond the Miss Universe contest in May, what are your personal aspirations?
Beyond the pageant, I want to spend more time with my family and buy them a home to ensure they can live with a real quality of life, wherever they are. I envision my non-profit, Go SuperNova, operate internationally, be a successful entrepreneur and run for political office in Canada.

I have read your story in Pursuit:365 and you talk about finding your voice and becoming active in helping get Vancouver to recognize Emancipation Day on August 1, 2020, during a pandemic. You managed to co-organize Juneteenth and shortly after, a 15,000 ally strong, safe and respectful public march. Less than a year later, Canadian national recognition of Emancipation Day became a national reality. Can you share how and why this became such an important passion for you?
Helping people and using my voice is something I feel is a civic duty. I spoke extemporaneously at the Freedom March and was approached by Shamika Mitchell to create the Juneteenth and Emancipation Day events. You owe it not only to your country but your fellow citizens to stand up for the rights of those that can’t always speak for themselves. For me it was a no-brainer stand up and use my voice. It was important that Canada recognized this part of our history, and why were adamant about the country recognizing emancipation nationally.

You were able to finally realize your greatest dream of getting your mother out of the South Sudan UN refugee camp after 8 years of civil war and separated from family long before that. How were you able to help make your biggest wish and dream come true? Can you share a bit about this journey and how you felt during that time?
One of the reasons why it took so long was due to safety concerns. The past 8 years, it was not safe for anyone to leave the country. The UN was the safest place, although my mother has severe burn marks on her right arm from almost being burned alive. Once the war subsided, it was a matter of collecting funds and devising a plan to help her during her 24 day journey to Ethiopia and the rest of the family. Having her out of the camps was one the happiest moments of my life. I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Her being there broke my heart. I finally feel whole again.

What are the challenges that being Miss Universe Canada during COVID-19 and how has it impacted your preparation for Miss Universe?
One of the challenges was having no audience. There’s nothing like a crowning moment with your friends and family. Unfortunately, I couldn’t have anyone there to watch me achieve one of my biggest dreams. Luckily, I had my Pageant sisters with me. In terms of preparation, I left Canada at the end of last year to go to the States. As I was planning to return, the country went on lockdown. It was then that we had no choice and decided it was best to go to Mexico so that I could continue my training with my full team.

Can you tell us about your We R One Project and what your goals were? We know you’re your plans had to keep changing due to COVID-19 medical and political restrictions. I am sure that your donations to Ethiopia and South Sudan of medical testing supplies will save many lives. What are your plans after Miss Universe? 
My We R One campaign is all about reminding people of our Oneness and bringing people together to make everlasting change. It’s about lending a helping hand to anyone that may need help. With my GoSuperNova non-profit I plan on traveling the world to do just that.

What would you tell other young women blessed with an unconventional beauty on how to believe in themselves? What was your epiphany? Were you always comfortable with who you were? Did living in a multicultural city like Vancouver help?
I think for the most part I was comfortable with myself. When it comes to beauty ideologies, I think I fell into that trap growing up. I used to straighten my hair, wear weaves and wigs all the time. This is not inherently bad, as hair is merely an accessory. It becomes bad when you don’t feel comfortable showing your natural beauty. When I cut my hair at first it wasn’t because I wanted to, but because my hair was really damaged from relaxers (chemical straightener) and so I had no choice. I hated the idea of having short hair because I thought it would make me look like a man. Once I did it, I felt liberated from the traditional constraints of beauty and femininity. With that being said, I would tell young girls to believe in themselves and not make themselves smaller, just because society expects them to. I would also tell them that being different is good. It allows you shine in your own way and that the best version is always the original, which is you. So please, don’t change for a prototype.

What are the most important “beauty” secrets or tips that anyone can attain?
For me less is more. You don’t need to use a hundred products. For me it’s this: Always washing my face no matter how late it is, drinking lots of water and mostly organic products. For years as a model I was told to do my own hair and makeup because make up artists and hairstylists had no experience with Black hair and skin.

What are the challenges and misplaced stereotypes that arise, and how do you overcome them?
The stereotypes that I often hear are those that fall into old concepts of beauty preconceptions. Some feel I should have hair as a beauty queen. Another is that I am more of a model not a beauty queen. I’m not sure what that means to be honest. It could be the fact that my hair is short once again, as most beauty queens have hair, which helps with the glamorous photos. The reigning Miss Universe was chosen with short, natural hair. I get it, you can do a lot with hair, but it is still only an accessory. In Milan I was asked why I came as my agent was told “No Blacks” for castings.

What has being Vegan taught you that you value the most and have you always been vegan?
Being vegan has taught me that food is medics. You truly are what you eat! I have more energy as a vegan than I have ever had. I’ve learned the importance of healthy eating and feeding your body not your cravings.

Miss Universe offers a platform for each contestant, what would you say about Canada as your adopted country, being the first woman from South Sudan to walk the Miss Universe stage, and what will your message be to the world as a contestant and beyond?
I have so much gratitude towards Canada. Canada has given me another chance at life. Being here was the best case possible for me. My life wouldn’t have been any better had I remained in Africa. Canada gave me many opportunities and raised me to be a strong, independent woman. That just shows you exactly what kind of country Canada is. Canada welcomes and Canada cares for all people and accepts them as they are. No changes required. THAT is Canada. My home. I intend to represent all Canadians and ensure that we always to our best and always try to do better.

What kind of role model and legacy do you want to create for yourself?
I want to be remembered for challenging the status quo of what is considered beautiful. Remember me as someone who has fearlessly used her voice to fight for racial equality. Remember me as a warrior who has peacefully fought for the rights of all people. Lastly, I want to be an inspiration to people of colour who have been told the colour of their skin is a hindrance. I say to you, it is a badge of honour so wear it with pride.

Your life has required tremendous discipline and values from early on. What’s your secret sauce as a social activist, representative of your country and your heritage, an international model that has graced the world’s most famous runways and represented the most famous brands? 
I don’t think it’s a secret. It’s more of a having a ‘Can do’ attitude. I’ve received many ‘No’s’ I’ve told myself over the past that “No” is an acronym for ‘New Opportunities’ so when I hear those words, I continue until the right path opens. Just because you don’t achieve your dreams at your desired time, doesn’t mean you never will.

What gives you the most hope for the future?
Life! Life has been great to me. I am hopeful that it’ll only get better.

Are you planning on sharing your life lessons to others either by speaking or writing?
Always! I believe in using your voice and sharing your story to inspire. Words have the power to empower whether oral or written.

How do women who often do not speak the same languages manage to communicate and create the kinds of friendships that last beyond the competition?
I haven’t competed with anyone that doesn’t speak English yet, but I know that when I do at Miss Universe it won’t be a problem, because love is a language we all understand. There are many ways to communicate; you just have to be open.

Here are Nova’s words of gratitude upon arriving in Ethiopia to be reunited with her family after 21 years:
I want to give me deepest appreciation to my team and amazing sponsors.
Words can’t explain how I feel right now. I’ll try my best to express all these emotions I’m currently embodying. It has taken me 21 years to reunite with my family. Being separated and living alone without my family has not been easy for me; neither has it been for them. 
My strength comes from my family. They are some of the strongest people I know. My mother, I don’t even have enough words to describe how incredible, strong and beautiful she is. If I can be half the woman my mother is, I’ll be extremely happy. 
For a parent to send a child away on their own is one of the biggest sacrifices. My parents took a chance and sent me away to Canada for the opportunity to have a better life. We were a part for so many years but the bond never faded. It was always there and today I saw and felt the strength and love of my family both near and far. I felt the presence of my ancestors. 
I’m both happy and sad. Happy: because I finally got to see and embrace my family and tell them 'I LOVE YOU' in person. Sad: because of the conditions they are living in. My mother got out of the United Nations camp on January 21 , 2021 after 8 years of being stuck there due to the conflict in South Sudan. 
The fact that she was able to make it out of there alive is a miracle on its own. Hearing the stories she would tell me and knowing that they once tried to burn her alive terrified me. There were times I didn’t hear from her and thought of the worst case scenario because it was very common to lose loved ones during that time. I truly believe that God made all of this happen. God brought her out and brought me back to them.

For her graphic <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/resort-2022/chanel#gallery-collection">Chanel Cruise</a> collection Virginie Viard sought inspiration in Provence, that beautiful region in the south of France lapped by the marshy Camargue and crowned by the hills of Les Baux-de-Provence, considered one of the area’s loveliest villages. Specifically, she set the collection in the Carrières de Lumières (Quarries of Light) in Les Baux, a series of chalky, cave-like rooms—the spaces left behind after centuries of excavations.

Virginie Viard worked with both Mod and Punk references: Striking black and white miniskirts, suits and coat dresses trellised with window pane blocks of small concrete beads (surplus stock from Montex’s embroidery for a Karl Lagerfeld Chanel couture show), and styling flourishes like fishnet stockings had a Mod sensibility. Accessories including zippered leather holster belts worn at the waist or thigh, handbag chain suspenders, and dog collars read as Punk, as did details like the rock and roll leather fringing on a shimmy dress, and the raw finishing used to hem the skirts and cuffs of caviar tweed suits and crochet minidresses.

There was more softness in the collection in ivory lace dresses scattered with embroidered good luck charms, and wide-legged, high-waisted white linen pants and cotton sweatshirting dresses embroidered with the wild flowers of Provence—lavender, thyme and cosmo daisies.

IF YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE BETTER LASH RETENTION, STOP DIPPING YOUR LASHES IN THE EDGE OF YOUR GLUE
Are you struggling getting your lashes to adhere well to the natural lash? 
Are you using your glue dot correctly and getting the best results that you can? 
Did you know that if you don’t dip your lashes in the glue correctly it can really affect the retention of your artificial lash to your natural lash?

When you squeeze out your glue dot onto your jade stone or glue ring, there is only so much time you have before your glue starts to dry out. The edges of your glue spot will eventually start to dry and create a skin. 
The freshest part of your glue will always be in the middle of your spot! 
So to really help you with your lashes, if you want to achieve better lash retention stop dipping your lashes in the edge of your glue! 
By using the middle part of your glue dot, you are always using the freshest most effective glue that will give you the best retention when applying your lash extension. 
Fresh glue will mean better results for you and your clients. Your lashes will last really well!!

Remember as the glue dries out, it is really important to change your glue spot every 20-30 minutes during your treatment so you have a lovely effective glue! Always dip in the middle! 
Don’t overload your artificial lash with too much glue, hold the lash straight upwards when dipping, not at an angle so not to cover the lash in too much glue. 
We want you to get the best results from your glue and use it well, so always dip in the middle and change your glue regularly :-))

<h1>Wispy individual lash extensions </h1>

As you all know we have our own YouTube channel called Beauty by Mirka. 
One of our followers has asked for a wispy set with individual lash extensions instead of Russian volume. 
As we are in isolation I was unable to work on a real model but hopefully my tips and tricks will help you to create your own beautiful wispy set or Kim K lashes as some people call it. 
I was using our rose gold tweezers curved and straight one. You can purchase them from our website. Click on the link in the picture. 
Lashes are from Lashbase 0.07mm C curl 11mm - 15mm (5 lashes stuck together in rays) and from Oh My Lash 0.15mm C curl (8mm-13mm). 
I was using VO1 glue from Eyeluvlashes.

<h1>My Skin Is...</h1>
Every skin type, color, and texture is different. The products I’m recommending are tried and true by me for my skin-type particularly . 
My skin is extremely sensitive and tends to be on the drier side. All products I use are cruelty-free and most are from clean brands.
I have also put energy into my health. I have upped my water intake, corrected my hormone imbalance, and started with collagen nightly. Although I do attribute my skin mostly to my products, beautiful skin is also reliant on good inner health. 
Keep that in mind before trying anything yourself and enjoy!

<h1>FACE WIPES</h1>
Burt’s Bees micellar face wipes are the only ones I have used that haven’t irritated my skin, and trust me I’ve tried many. I highly recommend!

<h1>CLEANSERS</h1>
The first step in my morning and night routine.

My all time favorite cleanser that is gentle on skin is First Aid Beauty’s “pure skin” cleanser. This formula foams without feeling soapy and is creamy enough to keep moisture in.

The Skin Laundry face wash is a favorite for when my skin feels oily or caked with makeup. Since my skim is dry, it is harder to use this everyday since it can strip your skin a little. But, it seriously removes everything and makes your face feel 100% purified and fresh. 
The Cocokind oil to milk cleanser is a new find for me. It’s extremely sensitive on skin and best for morning washes. I wouldn’t recommend this as an all-in-one cleanser since it’s too gentle to take away all your makeup but it’s a beautiful and refreshing way to wake up clean!
The Bogavia nourishing oil is an amazing makeup remover. You dispense a few pumps of the oil into your hand and rub it into your face. It can be used on eyes as well. When water is added it turns into a milk and wipes away all makeup. This is best for dryer skin types. It’s also best suited for sensitive skin as an alternative to face wipes that can often irritate. I use this product before cleansing with a foam wash for a deeper clean.

<h1>TONER</h1>
Toner was also a product that was difficult for me to find. My skin tended to breakout and dry up every time I tried one, but I was desperate for a refresh or deep clean after cleansing or a workout. 
The Cocokind toner was a recommendation to me and I quickly fell in love! My skin acclimated so well to this product. It can be sprayed or used with a cotton pad for a deeper application.

This Youth to the People toner is a new one for me. I am slowly introducing it since it is a stronger toner. It’s known to reduce the appearance of pores, which is something I’ve wanted to improve on. I recommend reading the instructions before beginning use. So far I have loved the results and can’t wait to make this a regular part of my routine.

<h1>SERUMS</h1>
This Bogavia gel is one of the single products that has transformed my skin. It has hyaluronic acid and CBD so it locks in moisture and takes down inflammation. I put this under my moisturizer day and night (during the day only when I don’t use vitamin C).

Finding a good Vitamin C was challenging for me. Having sensitive skin made it difficult to find a vitamin C serum that wouldn’t cause irritation and breakouts. I’ve tried Drunk Elephant’s one and many other cult favorites but this one really worked for me. Vitamin C has really helped me with balancing my skin tone. 
All Bogavia products can also be found at Erewhon. 
Retinol was also a tough find for me. I researched a lot and found that it is difficult to start using a retinol without some irritation. It’s recommended to use one that has a small percentage at first and work up to an every day usage. 
The First Aid Beauty retinol serum was one that showed up in my research for sensitive skin and I’m such a fan. I noticed results after about a month of using it and never turned back. I’m unsure if I want to move up to a higher percentage since this one worked so well for me!

<h2>FACE OIL</h2>
I fell in love with this oil a couple years ago. Kora Organics is a skincare line started by supermodel Miranda Kerr. This oil has a bit of a cult following, and for a good reason. 
It can be used day and night and even mixed in to moisturizers to create a glowy finish on your skin. It works amazing under makeup and can even be mixed into foundation or concealers to make the product more mailable and sheer.

Whenever my skin is feeling dry or in some need of extra loving, this Bogavia midnight repair oil is my go-to. This oil is best used as a sort of nighttime treatment. You will wake up with fully moisturized and repaired skin.

<h2>EYE CREAM</h2>
Sunday Riley’s auto correct eye cream is the best eye cream I have ever used. It did wonders with my dark circles and fine lines. I also have a history with reactions to eye creams and this one didn’t irritate me at all.

Cocokind’s eye cream was recommended to me, mainly for the applicator end. I have just started trying this creamy eye cream and will update with results after a while of using. So far I like the Sunday Riley better but this is a great option for those who prefer more of a cream. I recommend keeping this in the fridge for a cooling application!

Weleda’s Skin food is a cult favorite moisturizer. It can be used on the face and the body and is hailed by many of the industry’s top makeup artists. It is a thick cream best used under makeup, at night, or during the winter months. Since my skin is dry I use it all the time but it can also be used as a sort of mask. It creates the glowiest moisturized finish.

Youth to the People’s air-whip moisturizer is the yummiest texture. It really does feel whipped. This moisturizer is the lightest one I’ve ever used so it’s great for the summer or when your skin is feeling a little more oily. I love this moisturizer for during the day, especially when it gets hotter. It has a cooling quality to it when put on. 
Kate Somerville’s goat milk moisturizer is also a new discovery here. It was a sample in my IPSY Glam Bag and I fell in love. It goes on beautifully for sensitive skin and also did not cause breakouts with my fiancé, who is prone to them from moisturizer use. It has a thin and milky texture but a little goes a long way. 
Eminence is a brand I discovered through my facial technician at the Four Seasons. It is a little more on the pricey side but worth it. There are a few products of there’s that I love that aren’t mentioned in here in depth. The coconut moisturizer is a very rich cream that has age corrective qualities in it. It’s great for one you want a thicker treatment. 
The Eminence makeup remover and rhubarb face mask are some of the products I am a super fan of.

<h1>FACE SCRUBS</h1>
Bogavia’s face scrub is a gentle introduction into exfoliation. This can be used nightly but I tend to use it only a few times each week to give my face a break.

This! I am in love with Kora Organic’s turmeric face scrub. The best experience for using this mask is to apply it in the shower, keep it on while bathing, and then rinsing off at the end. The steam creates the coolest feeling and such a yummy smell. A very enjoyable exfoliating treat.

<h2>MASKS</h2>
Biossance’s detox mask is a great go-to whenever your skin is breaking out or feeling oily. Don’t be alarmed if your skin is tingling or burning a little, that’s just the mask working!

Seriously the best nighttime treatment is the Youth to the People Dream Mask. This mask has the creamiest texture without being too thick. The reason why it is hailed and has the patented Allure award is because you wake up with such an all-around glow! It is a very effective nighttime treatment. Especially if you have to look awake the next day!

Welcome to the beginning of Uncovered Magazine. Every page in this magazine has been published with a great amount of thoughtfulness. In a world where information regarding the care of your skin can seem crowded, we hope that these pages can provide clarity. The hope of Uncovered is for its readers to learn to love and care or their skin through trusted advice and recommendations by our team. 

I have always been interested in skincare but I often have found myself confused due to the flooding of advice on the internet that often contradicts each other. By creating Uncovered I hope that readers will have a source of trusted information in the caring of their skin. 

Whether it is by finding that routine that works for you or gaining confidence in your natural beauty, it is our intention that our community will learn to look at themselves in the mirror at night and find a new care and appreciation for their skin as it is completely uncovered with cosmetics. 

In this issue we will focus on the past and the present. You will find a fascinating timeline of essential methods of skincare used throughout history.  <li>AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid. AHAs are water-soluble acids naturally derived from substances such as sugarcane, fruits, and milk. They are a class of natural or synthetic ingredients used in a variety of skin care products.</li>
 </ul>

 <li>BHA stands for beta hydroxy acid and is otherwise known as “salicylic acid”. BHAs are a type of oil-soluble acid naturally derived from willow extract and other plants.</li>
</ul>

<h1>How do AHAs work?</h1>
AHAs work as a chemical exfoliant that peel dead skin cells off the surface layer of your skin to reveal fresh new skin cells underneath. The extent to which it removes dead skin cells depends on the type of AHA, PH level, concentration, and other ingredients it may be applied with. In addition to exfoliation, research claims they help to:

Therefore, AHA exfoliants are often used to produce anti-aging results and promote the appearance of young and healthy skin. The most common <a href="https://www.skincity.co.uk/blog/2014/04/aha-best-skin/">types of AHAs</a> found in skin care products are:

Glycolic acid and lactic acid are the most effective and widely used ingredients. AHAs can be found in most daily skin care products and they are gentle on sensitive skin.

<h1>How do BHAs work?</h1>
BHAs are similar to AHAs in that they are both chemical exfoliants. However, instead of just dissolving the dead skin cells off the surface layer of the skin, BHAs work deeper inside the pores to improve cell turnover.
BHAs are commonly referred to as “salicylic acid” because this is the main BHA found in most products. Other BHA exfoliants seen in skin care products may be listed as:

 <li>Beta hydroxybutanoic acid</li>
 </ul>

 <li>Tropic acid</li>
 </ul>

Both BHAs and AHAs offer similar benefits such as improving skin tone, brightening, smoothing and so on. But since BHAs are oil-soluble, they penetrate through any oils on the skin to unclog and cleanse pores from the inside. This prevents the build-up of oil and dead skin that causes breakouts. Therefore dermatologists and specialists more often recommend BHAs for people with oily and acne-prone skin. BHAs are also less irritating than AHAs because of their larger molecule size and anti-inflammatory properties.

To quickly compare, the main differences between AHAs and BHAs:

 <ul>
 <li>AHAs are water-soluble and BHAs are oil-soluble. This means BHAs are able to dissolve in oils where AHAs can only dissolve in water.</li>
 </ul>


 <ul>
 <li>AHAs are more appropriate for dry skin and BHAs are great for oily skin because BHAs have the ability to reduce excess oil.</li>
 </ul>


 <ul>
 <li>AHAs only work on the surface layer of skin while BHAs penetrate deeper into pores.</li>
 </ul>


 <ul>
 <li>BHAs can be less irritating than AHAs.</li>
 </ul>

All thats left to do is choose the right exfoliant for your skin! Feel free to experiment with both AHAs and BHAs to find what products are right for you. Whether you are looking to fix a skin concern or improve the overall health and appearance of your skin, both exfoliants may be beneficial.
