Last month, I had the chance to bid on a friend’s “moving out auction”. This, being on a film camera that had all the bells and whistles I was looking for in my next shooter; point & shoot and a great big flash.

This is a photo series recap of my test roll on that very camera. The Olympus XA1.

Pros:

The camera is smarter than I am ... it thankfully has an auto exposing light meter that not only sets the exposure for you but prevents you from taking photos under exposed.

It has an attachable flash ... sounds like a gimmick to have one on what as might be a disposable camera but it fills all the shadowy nooks and crannys of a scene wonderfully.

Cons:

For a film camera the images still seem too digital ... maybe it’s the auto leveling or auto focus but I feel as if the images might as well be taken on an iPhone with some minor adjustments done in a post-app.

My final thoughts are that this is only my first roll on this camera. Film stocks vary the final product so much even while the camera stays the same. I’m looking forward to keeping this little tool in my bag as a great plan B and light weight go-to.
