Jamal has conceived and orchestrated every season of Vancouver Fashion Week and has now expanded into Kid’s Fashion Week held during the Friday and Saturday daytime giving some of Vancouver’s young up and coming models a chance to walk the runway and support Vancouver.

His passion for fashion and providing a showcase for talent in all aspects of the fashion experience, including sustainability and inclusive of abilities from designers, models, make up artists, hair stylists, photographers, stagehands, teachers, students, bloggers, media, department stores, boutiques and pop ups, and buyers.

<h1>Brief History of VFW</h1>
Since its conception in 2001, Vancouver Fashion Week has been dedicated to cultivating the success of both established designers and award-winning emerging designers with its global perspective and highly multicultural approach. Championing diversity in designers, styles, age, experience, special needs and recognizing up and coming bright future stars as well as honouring industry veterans in every aspect of the fashion industry, is at its core, 
Vancouver Fashion Week has grown to be the second-largest fashion week in North America – and continues to grow today as the fastest growing fashion week in the world.
Founded by entrepreneur Jamal Abdourahman, Vancouver Fashion Week was initially branded ‘International Fashion Week’ for its first season. Fiercely passionate about the fashion industry and his home city, Jamal made it his ongoing mission to travel to fashion capitals to connect with industry leaders and to keep Vancouver on the top of the fashion radar. Since its first season, Vancouver Fashion Week has been built from the ground up by the fashion industry and has become a celebrated occasion in the Canadian fashion community.
As part of its commitment to up and coming talent, Vancouver Fashion Week presented its first annual Nancy Mak Award in 2014. The Nancy Mak Award is given to a talented and promising emerging BC-based designer with the intention of providing tools needed to bring their brand to the next step.
In 2016, Vancouver Fashion Week expanded into children’s fashion with the incorporation of Vancouver Kids Fashion Week, which has become a media hub for Canadian children’s boutiques and international children’s fashion designers alike. Since then, Vancouver Fashion Week has launched two magazines both in print and digital: Vancouver Kids Fashion Week Magazine (bi-annual), and Micro Macro Magazine.
In 2017, Vancouver Fashion Week launched Global Fashion Collective (GFC) to further propel the global exposure of its most promising designers. Producing shows at New York Fashion Week, Tokyo Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week through Global Fashion Collective, The team at Vancouver Fashion Week continues to provide its designers not only with a platform for their craft but also with ongoing opportunities for commerce and growth.
The City of Vancouver proclaims Vancouver Fashion Week every year. 
Many Local designers have gotten their first public runway experience under the hashtag of #vanfashionweek and many more to come, starting at #vfwfw22. So come as you are, dress to impress and welcome back to Vancouver Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2022.

It is with the greatest of pleasure that I am able to share this Vancouver Fashion Week Fall Winter 2022 “MAG” with you. What makes it so special, is the fact that we are actually going to be gathering together in person with global designers. I am thrilled to be seeing the people who make Vancouver Fashion Week so special, year after year, including the designers, models, makeup artists, photographers, international and local bloggers, instructors, buyers and the fashion-forward people who thrive on being able to get out and show the world just what they’ve got. It is not easy to produce the 2nd largest fashion week in North America. something of this magnitude on a semi-annual basis that has the potential to have a huge impact on the showcased designers.
None of this of course would be possible without the vision of Jamal Abdourahman. His dedication to support new designers here in Vancouver including Kid’s Fashion Week and his Global Fashion Collective in some of fashion’s most revered events offers us an opportunity to expand our fashion horizon.
This MAG would not be possible without the dedication and contribution of Marilyn R. Wilson, who cajoles pre-VFW interviews from people all over the world to entice an and excite us, but she also ensures that every designer family and foreign journalists is taken under her wing, introduced to the right people and made to feel welcome and special. I look forward to more of Andrew Jackson’s contributions in his J Andrew Speaks column called Dress the Part.. I know that many of my other blogging colleagues and social media posting friends will have so much to contribute as always. I admire and appreciate the professional photographers and the work that they do as well.
Most of all I appreciate the people who come out to take part in the Vancouver Fashion Week experience. I always look forward to seeing old and new friends, be inspired by new trends, and once again feel the thrill of a live event. One good thing that has come out of the pandemic, is the ability to be able to share in this experience even if you can’t be there physically. PASSION and PURPOSE motivate me to seek opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives. Experiential, transformational, experiential travel was my main focus, until the pandemic destroyed our ability to travel for the better part of 2 years. <h1>Marilyn R. Wilson</h1>
The Grand Dame of VFW
Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer, published author, speaker and editor with a passion for interviewing. Her current career began at the age of 50 when she threw caution to the wind and answered a Craigslist ad from a New York fashion magazine, even though she had no experience. When they surprisingly accepted two of her story ideas, the doors opened on a whole new career - proof positive it is never to late to embrace a new passion.
Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a “one-on-one” with an internationally recognized artist, her goal is the same – to share the unique journeys of inspiring individuals. In 2007, this led her to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the local fashion industry, paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Her articles have been featured in publications such as Raine Magazine (NYC) and Schon Magazine (London). 
Wilson took her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book titled Life Outside The Box featuring mini-bios of ten of her favourite interviews. This was followed by The Wisdom of Listening where she shares her decade long journey of interviewing through the many life-changing pieces of gold (wisdom) she received in those interviews. The most important? We are all exactly who we are meant to be. It's time for each of us to embrace and walk our own unique path – without apology!
Marilyn is also fondly known as the godmother, grand dame, Mother Theresa and anchor Vancouver fashion week blogger, doing personal interviews with every designer who will take the time to respond to her interview requests, always front row and centre, graciously taking writers, photographers, designers, models and their families under her well-heeled wings to ensure everyone is properly welcomed, introduced, photographed and connected. Backstage, and with all the volunteers needed to put on a show of this magnitude, she is equally revered and welcomed backstage by the makeup artists, dressers, and her thoughtful crew snacks to express her appreciation for the hours of dedication it takes to put on such a complex event.

J. Andrew Jackson is a lover of fashion, a fashion blogger and journalist. He has over 40 years of experience in the fields of costume and fashion design, having learned to see at an early age from his mom, a seamstress. . He now writes the blog the Dress The Part/ J. Andrew Speaks , and freelances. 
From a very young age he loved to design create and explore the world of fashion and costume, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts, in Costume Design and Art History. After working as a theatrical costume designer , teacher and artist, his latest outlet of creativity is his blog, Dress the Part, spanning contemporary, vintage, luxury, street wear and ultra glam, as long as the craftsmanship and style fits the function.

Ah, Halloweekend in Los Angeles. You’re either in or you’re out, and we decided to fully participate this year. Whitney and I even ordered our costumes in late September which was a nice change from the usual last minute Amazon prime costume scramble I typically partake in. Our group Astro costume last year was such a success we knew we wanted to create another squad costume and the THING idea couldn’t have been more fitting for our girl group. After a few alterations to number the costumes 1-8 and Sami’s last minute Cat in the Hat ensemble (also please disregard Amanda’s wiglessness) we were ready to hit the LA Halloscene. We bounced around all night looking identical and it was a total hoot. Halloween tip: if you can manage to convince a group of friends to assemble to do a coordinated costume, studies show you have 10X more fun.

I’ll let you in on a game-changing Halloween costume tip. Sure it’s Halloween and anything goes, but no one really wants to be fully nakey, especially when it’s freezing out. There are these miracle tights, they’re the ones that the Hooters girls wear. They’re dirt cheap, they smooth you out, hold you in and give you a glowing tan. When I first met Zack he informed me of his stance on Halloween - that he refused to put effort into a costume and that he would be, by default, a pilot every year for the foreseeable future. And sure enough, unless I take it upon myself to put together an alternate ensemble for him, that’s what tends to happen. Well this year I decided I would take matters into my own hands, and while it took a lot of convincing, I managed to throw together a non-pilot couples costume that he agreed to put on (it was up in the air until day-of if he would actually wear it or not). Did I plan the entire idea around my costume? Yeah, maybe. Whitney and I wanted to be Buzz Lightyears last year but the costume was sold out. But let’s focus on the fact that I got Zack to retire the pilot for 1/2 of Halloween this year! I’ll take the W. If you saw Woody and Buzz Lightyear making out on Saturday night, that was us.

Six Mile Lake

<h1>Six Mile Lake Pride Parade</h1>
For Six Mile Lake, the problems of the pandemic called for an innovative solution, which is now becoming a welcome tradition. This tight lake community is coming together for a second year to show solidarity and support for our LGBTQ+ community, holding their second annual Gay Pride Boat Parade on June 26. 

Due to COVID-19 strict social distancing measures and the elimination of large social gatherings, community events are still being cancelled. However, one determined young woman and a gay rights advocate, found a way to raise hope and create something fun and positive in support of her friends in the LGBTQ+ community.

Allison Vidug has deep rooted ties to Six Mile Lake where her great grandfather first purchased property in the 1940s. As a lifelong cottager with a love of the lake, the land, and the nature surrounding it, Allison took the leap and moved from the city to live here full time in April 2021 to put down permanent roots.

As an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, Allison wanted to celebrate Gay Pride Week with a socially distanced parade where everyone could participate, while remaining within their own social bubbles and still show their love and support for the community. Last year, without knowing how the idea would be received or even how many people and vessels would participate, Allison posted a brief outline on the Six Mile Lake facebook page one week before the scheduled parade providing details of the lake parade route.

The morning of the parade, Allison and her friends were left speechless as boat after boat arrived at the starting point, decorated and flying the pride flags, ready to sail the parade route. Young and old, including a couple in their 90s with limited mobility, found a way to join the festivities as the regatta of boats sailed by while cottagers on shore stood at their docks cheering, waving pool noodles, blowing air horns, and clapping in solidarity. It was truly a show of love, respect, and tolerance.
At the end of the parade route everyone dropped anchor for a swim and to take the opportunity to meet other cottagers, some for the first time, while revelling in the spirit of a new beginning and hope for the future of this lake community.

One mom explained "I have been on this lake my whole life and I have never seen an event like this. It brought me to tears of happiness at the outpouring of love".

The success of the 2020 lake parade created such buzz that immediately, many people came forward asking how they could participate in the next one, raising no doubt that there would be a repeat in 2021. With the enthusiasm and support of the community, the Six Mile Lake Annual Gay Pride Boat Parade is now established, including an extended route this year to include more of the lake shoreline.
 
Along with the residents’ interest comes far reaching support from local associations and establishments. The <a href="https://www.sixmilelake.net">Six Mile Lake Cottage Association</a> is pledging their support with the entry of a decorated pontoon boat that will be sailing alongside the rest of the boaters. <a href="https://www.muskokabrewery.com">Muskoka Brewery</a> will be joining and lending their name to the event. <a href="https://www.thep2plife.com/planned-2-perfection/">Planned 2 Perfection Limited</a> , <a href="https://www.thep2plife.com/paradise-2-perfection/">Paradise 2 Perfection Travel</a> and <a href="https://www.thep2plife.com">The P2P Life</a> are also proud to show their ongoing support of the community and its causes.

All are welcome to show their Pride Spirit and join in the festivities whether it be from the shore or by boat.

A small idea with a big outcome certainly has given new life to what has otherwise been a very stressful year for all. Allison, her friends and the residents of Six Mile Lake are a true testament to meaning of Community!

Joel Bakan is a professor of law at the University of British Columbia, and a legal scholar and commentator. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, Bakan has law degrees from Oxford, Dalhousie, and Harvard. He is a popular and accomplished public speaker who has addressed business, government, academic, and activist audiences in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.

How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy
The world has changed a lot since 2003 when The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power pulled back the curtain on the real costs of the corporate entity and the holy grail of shareholder value above product or service, its employees, customers, or location. Political, social, and environmental disasters including the current Coronavirus, laid bare systemic inequities and a looming global crisis of epic proportions. 
To appear relevant and current, big business slyly rebranded themselves as The New Corporation; socially conscious and purposeful superheroes ready to do battle often by masquerading immoral corporate actions and power grabs dressed up as saviors to pressing social initiatives. 
Bakan’s The New Corporation takes a scathing look at the whole ‘doing well by doing good’ movement, exploring how companies insidiously position themselves as ‘good corporate citizens’ without acknowledging the damage they cause.
Meanwhile it takes students like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai and locally, Western Canadian activists like Tzeporah Berman, Politicians like Chief Judy Wilson and Elizabeth May and more recently, after the book and film, passionate young men and women like Nova Stevens, the current Miss Universe Canada, who came to Canada as a refugee at 6, and helped get Emancipation Day recognized in Vancouver, and Canada. Globally, grassroots citizen movements were born or re-invigorated to address issues like CEO compensation in the face of huge gender and racial disparity, climate, food security, housing, aging and health care that can no longer be ignored. Even the very concept of democracy is in question given the combination of corporate and governmental global actions and inactions.

<h1>The Film: The New Corporation: </h1>
The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel It literally took the pandemic to unwrap a wrap for this film, as it became unfortunately, an even more necessary sequel than Joel Bakan and Jennifer Abbott could ever have imagined given the additional gamechangers of the end of the Trump term, US election events and COVID-19. The New Corporation traces the devastating consequences of a world perilously close to losing its foundation of democracy, a world remade in the corporation’s image-split between the primary responsibility (by definition) to the shareholder’s interests and the public good. Bakan and Abbott graphically connect the dots between then and now, including the cataclysmic changes within the timing of the making of the film because according to Bakan, of the “ways governments and corporations responded to it hit upon just about every one of our themes – privatization, economic and racial injustice, corporate greed.” Its final cut did not just leave us in despair but rather inspired us to keep forcing accountability with stories of resistancew we and change from around the world that demands both a thriving public and private sector.
Bakan added, “It’s really interesting to see how corporations – especially those that purport to embrace purpose and sustainability, ones that say they care – have pushed Trump to be even more Trump-ish. Major US corporations at the helm of the ‘new’ corporation movement continue to lobby for tax cuts and deregulation that disable governments from promoting the very social and environmental values they purport to care about. We allude to this in the film, andI provide chapter and verse in the book. So, yes Trump has given more carte blanche – but big business has pushed him to give even more than he might have.”
The film shows how corporations have become skilled at “camouflaging their activities, dressing up in shades of green and paying lip service to diversity and innovation.” The book and film could easily spawn many more necessary sequels while delineating a bird’s eye view of these chaotic times. The onus is thrown back on us to make the necessary connections and to actively seek meaningful solutions if we want to leave our children and grandchildren a real future.

All Canadians should be deeply concerned with our relationship to government and business and the ethical crossroads we find ourselves at in a technologically-driven world that rewards private companies at the expense of the individual. 
How we chart a path forward in the future following the pandemic is inevitably up to us, but Bakan's book illustrates ways in which we as individuals can monitor and protect the environment, keep corporations in check and remain diligent and determined on a local and international level to providing a better future for the next generation”.

About Adam
Adam Elliott Segal is a writer, editor, journalist and author. Winner of the 2020 Toronto Star Short Story Contest for his story “Burning” and nominated for a 2020 National Magazine Award for “The Dahlia,” he has published award-winning work in leading Canadian magazines and newspapers over the last two decades and lived and worked in Canada’s three largest cities. Passionate about social justice and social issues, he has written about black market adoption for Maisonneuve, genetics and DNA for This magazine and his byline has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Province, Reader’s Digest, enRoute, Chatelaine and VICE. 
He has held editorial and administrative roles at Hot Docs International Film Festival, Sportsnet, Spafax and holds a Combined Honours Degree in Comparative and English Literature from the University of Western Ontario and diplomas from the Humber School for Writers and the Ryerson Publishing program. Originally from Vancouver, he lives in Toronto with his wife, and their cat, Cleo and now, his most creative work to date, his newborn son, Jonah.

Ten years after the release of The Corporation, which remains the most successful Canadian documentary ever made, The New Corporation’s genesis rose from an initial meeting in January 2015 between Producer Trish Dolman and members of the team behind the original 2003 film about the possibility of a sequel. Producer Betsy Carson joined the team that same month and Writer/Director Joel began writing the treatment for the sequel based on ideas he had been formulating for his follow-up book The New Corporation: How ‘Good’ Corporations are Bad for Democracy. 
Research, development, fundraising and preliminary interviews took place from January 2015 through 2017. In 2017, Associate Producer Dawn Brett-Hauschild joined the team to secure the core interviews for the project and director Jennifer Abbott (co-director and Editor of The Corporation) re-joined the team as Director and supervising editor. With extensive and ongoing research completed and development shooting secured, and DOP Ian Kerr on board, principal photography began in early 2018 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. 
Filming took place for the next two years around the world at the following locations: Vancouver, BC Berkeley, CA Boston, MA Los Angeles, CA New York, NY Portland, OR San Francisco, CA Seattle, WA London, UK Brussels, Belgium Davos, Switzerland Nairobi, Kenya Barcelona, Spain Sydney, Australia. 
Post-production began concurrently with filming. In 2018, editor Peter Roeck came on board to help craft Joel’s treatment into a feature documentary structure. Sound Designer Velcrow Ripper and Composer Matt Robertson worked closely with the editing team throughout 2019 and 2020. Principal archival researcher Kate Lingley sourced more than 1100 clips for the film over the 2 years of the edit. The film was completed in mid-August of 2020.

What does this 40ft, $80k refrigeration unit enable?
We want to provide healthy food security to not only our immediate area, but to our neighbors within Watts. We did a breakdown of what feedingupto1,500 families looks like over even 1 year:
▪️It is sustainable due to agreements already given by Whole Foods, Amazon and other highly reputable food organizations.
▪️It is in the middle of the community in need and brings the food to the residents. In comparison, other food banks are often on the outskirts of town and not accessible to residents that are having to juggle raising their children, work, lack of transportation, and lack of ability to travel with large amounts of food.
▪️The consistency of weekly, high caliber, nutritious food is the opposite of the unhealthy options low-income communities typically have access to.
▪️Our large network of volunteers (over 5,000 in total) makes this distribution affordable. We are alsoconsistently developing new partnership opportunities to acquire more food (and growing the need for this 40ft refrigeration unit).
▪️The fact that we could feed up to 1,500 FAMILIES in Watts for $1.07/week or $0.15/day is truly compelling. This 40ft refrigeration unit will enable this high impact innovative program! WILL YOU PLEASE HELP US? YOU CAN STILL CONTRIBUTE TODAY!

The Watts Farmers Market opens up at 10:30am for the community to receive free, healthy food!It all takes place on our Outdoor Basketball Court, behind the Watts Empowerment Center, while carefully abiding by all health and safety protocols.

The Watts Empowerment Center is “The #1 Most Active Community Center in Los Angeles.” This 12,900 sq ft state-of-the-art facility committed to the children, youth, and families within Watts Housing Projects.
These 3.3 acres are the heartbeat of the community. Locals can discover their purpose and develop their talents with the help of top industry and business professionals that provide mentorship to many within the community.
Resources offered range from Sports Leagues, After School Tutoring, STEM Media Lab, Culinary Arts Kitchen, Performing Arts Studio, Music, Acting, Fashion Design, Etiquette Courses, Resume Building Workshops, Anti-Bullying Classes, Mental Health/Stress Management, and beyond.

<h1>Discover the Santa Lucia Festival</h1>
One of the largest events in Latin America goes worldwide

We’ve sacrificed so much this year in the name of health, safety while navigating this worldwide pandemic. We’ve been forced to examine what is important and what truly is essential. That being said, many of the things we’ve sacrificed aid our mental health, greater wellness and bring joy to our everyday lives. Live Music. Who doesn’t miss live music?! 
Monterrey, Mexico took this into account when organizing its annual Santa Lucia Festival. As one of the largest cultural events in all of Latin America, this year health precautions were top priority. The seven week long festival released lineups each week in alliance with the standing health situation in the city and the state of Nuevo Leon’s health indicators. During this, the festival’s thirteenth year, more than 340 artists performed, four main concerts took place, two exhibitions showcased local artists, speakers offered a wide range topic discussions and various buildings were lit as the city’s “Lights of Hope.” 
Keeping citizens safe, the festival did not have onsite participation but instead, for it’s first time, live-streamed performances around the world for viewing in the moment and available to binge watch anytime on the Santa Lucia International Festival YouTube channel. While the festival was broadcast into viewers’ homes, surprise pop-up trucks occasionally made appearances driving through the city’s neighborhoods carrying a DJ mixing tracks, a band playing their best known songs or a singer performing her hits.
Dance, music, cultural learning and even a drone show; if you don’t know Monterrey, beginning to check out this incredible city through it’s arts and entertainment by diving into the Santa Lucia International Festival online is the perfect way to feel it’s soul.
